Jett Lawrence Interview - Redbud

  • Interview

He just keeps on winning, passing all-time greats in the win lists and moving closer and closer to the GOATS records. While it will take a sensational run, and nothing is assured, the way Jett Lawrence is going about winning, isn’t just a little impressive, he is the most consistent rider ever (after Carmichael).

With his championship points lead growing and his confidence doing the same, it looks like he might add another major AMA title to his already impressive list of titles. As always, we run the winners interview after Jett spoke to the World media and this is what he told us all below.

MXLarge: Jett, how did the bike feel?

Lawrence: The bike was handling not too bad today and it was good enough to win, thankfully. Since Southwick, our bike has made a big improvement. That has also helped unlock that little bit extra speed.

MXLarge: When you are leading and you have a big gap, is that easy, do you get distracted, or do you start to think something else?

Lawrence: Yes, sometimes I will have a squirrel brain and think of something random, not even about dirt bikes. When I have a really good flow and I am not really focusing on the gap, I am just focusing on my lines, which line prior was a little bit thinner than the rest, is it going to be blown up, is it going to have a big pocket in it and stuff like that. I am more focusing on this things when I am out front and not too focused on the gap. I will think about that when I am going past the mechanics area, going past pit board straight.

MXLarge: You are laying down in the first lap, what is your mentality then, are you thinking about the overall or thinking I need to go in this moto, because it seemed you were riding with a lot of intensity after that?

Lawrence: The first thing that came to mind was, get the F up and get going, because this isn’t a place you want to be staying. Like normal, evaluate the situation. I went down, asked too much of the tyres in that one section. Get up, where am I at, P18, and I could see them right there, so its going to be harder than moto one, but stick to your laps times and see what you are able to do.

MXLarge: You were jumping to the inside after the rollers, is that something you started doing that moto. You were fully committed inside, seemed like a little scary sometimes. Walk us through that?

Lawrence: No, I was always doing that on Friday at the press day. It just helped me to get over that, because that single is pretty big. Better to just jump over it, but the bump I was popping off shaved down a little more and it got harder, but nothing too crazy.

MXLarge: It was a big event for Honda, how did it feel to give Honda such a result on such a big race for the brand?

Lawrence: The big bosses are in town, so you got to, or better pull your finger out and ride good, because you got to look good for them you know. Jo did awesome in the 250 class, he rode unreal. It was good to see, he dropped the rest of the guys. You want to do a little bit better, so the boss is happy.

MXLarge: How was the track this year?

Lawrence: It was very deep and you couldn’t flow or tip it over in the ruts, because the bike would bog, it was a lot deeper than previous years.

MXLarge: You’ve kind of led this next generation into where you guys are now. So how cool is it?

Lawrence: No, it’s really, really cool, we’ve raced each other for so many years. We’ve built this respect with each other where we race each other clean. When we are next to each other, we’re good. We’re kind of comfortable next to each other, unlike some other guys, where you kind of get a little sketched out, where I could go down a straight rhythm lane with J Coop, be fine, vice versa. So even with Hunter [Lawrence] as well, you know, we race each other very respectfully. I think it’s one really cool thing, and being able to race against him for most of my career so far, it’s been really cool.

MXLarge: How’s it feel to dominate again, you know, dominate the sport again and bring Honda back to the top of the sport?

Lawrence: It’s really cool, obviously. And to do it for Honda as well, it’s even better. There are a lot of old fans of Honda and we always get praise and they say, thanks so much for putting Honda back up there. It’s really cool, you know? Honda, being such a big manufacturer, is awesome. We’re just happy to do the Honda people of HRC proud, you know, B-Dub, Lars, obviously the big boss in Japan as well. So, I think we’re just happy to be up there and put the bike on the top step, where we think it belongs.
