Jorge Prado World MXGP Champ
In huge celebrations in Spain, Red Bull GasGas factory rider Jorge Prado has scored his 11th Grand Prix win of the season and in doing so, also added a fourth World motocross championship. The 49th GP victory in his still young career and let’s hope he returns one day and gets that 50th, which has a lot of historical value in our great sport.
Jorge Prado: It was a great year, I deserve this title and this is the fourth one. Lets go!!
The GP overall was Jorge Prado 43 points, Tim Gajser 42pts and Jeffrey Herlings 40pts, while the championship points were Prado 996 points, Tim Gajser 986pts and Jeffrey Herlings 944pts.
To say anyone else deserved to be World MXGP champion this year would be a huge mistake, because the Spaniard was really in a class of his own, when it mattered. The fact he beat the two best riders of the last decade in Tim Gajser and Jeffrey Herlings and at times, he beat these two legends easily, well, it was sensational. If he stayed in Europe and didn’t head to American next year, he could well pick up a handful of MXGP titles, but for now, we will never know.
At 23 years of age and with his fourth motocross World championship to his name, Jorge Prado joins Torsten Hallman, Harry Everts and Heikki Mikkola as four time World champions and in the all-time list for World titles and GP wins combined he is just behind Everts (10), Cairoli (9), Robert (6), Herlings (5), Joel Smets (5), Tim Gajser (5), Roger De Coster (5), Eric Geboers (5), Georges Jobe (5). Tenth in a list of legends and at an age he could still be racing the MX2 class.
His 49th GP victory places him just one single GP win behind Joel Robert in the all-time list, with just Jeffrey Herlings (108), Stefan Everts (101), Antonio Cairoli (94), Joel Smets (57), Roberts (50) and Tim Gajser (49) ahead of him, and let’s not forget, this guy is 23 years of age.
It is just a pity he will now fly off and we all wish him well in America in 2025 and hope he doesn’t see the same fate as other World champions, Sebastien Tortelli, Ben Townley or Greg Albertyn with major injuries a major part of their journey to USA, and he will be more like J. M. Bayle and goes there and continues his winning form. Man, its going to be a difficult job, trying to match the Lawrence brothers, Chase Sexton and that young American sensation, Haiden Deegan.
When the pressure was on in 2023 and it started looking like Tim Gajser was going to be be crowned World MXGP champion, Prado returned to his devastating form and won in Turkey, China and Spain.
In the last 20 years, only Stefan Everts, Antonio Cairoli and Tim Gajser have been able to defend their premier class title, and that isn’t a bad list of riders to join. The two greatest of all time in Everts and Cairoli and a rider who could very easily become the third best GP rider of all time.
MXGP Moto Two
Prado the holeshot, but the big news was Gajser was pushed off the track in turn one and cut the track, very similar to what happened in Mantova in 2021 and what happened to Herlings in moto one. Prado led from Herlings, Febvre, Seewer, Gajser, Guillod, Coldenhoff, Fernandez, Renaux and Bonacorsi in 10th.
Lap one it was Prado, Herlings, Febvre, Gajser, Seewer, Guillod, Coldenhoff, Fernandez, Bonacorsi, and Renaux. Herlings into first as Prado made a big mistake and was also passed by Febvre and Gajser. Lap six it was Herlings, Febvre, Gajser, Prado, Seewer, Guillod, Coldenhoff, Fernandez, Bonacorsi, and Renaux.
Lap nine the lead by Herlings was 1.9 over Febvre, with Gajser three second off Herlings lead and Prado was 10 seconds back in third. Then came Seewer, Guillod, Coldenhoff, Fernandez, Renaux and Van Doninck. Herlings wins the moto from Febvre and Gajser, but Prado won the day, the year and the championship.
