Lawrence - The Rope a Dope
As we mentioned in one of our previews for the Washougal round of the AMA motocross championships, Chase Sexton and Eli Tomac would be tough to beat there. Both had multiple wins, now four each after, with Sexton winning at Washougal in 2021, 2022, 2024 and obviously, 2025. Tomac won at Washougal in 2016, 2018 and 2019 on the 450 and 2013 on the 250. Jett Lawrence knew he would have a hard time getting to Sexton and said so after the race.
“I knew Chase and Eli [Tomac] were very good here, watching them in ’22 and then racing Chase in ’23, he was on my ass the entire time and he was fast. I knew this was my worst track of the circuit, and I just had to rely on my starts. I got screwed a bit in the first one by the Spanish mate, but I managed to wiggle my way through in the second one after not the best jump. It’s not an overall, but I’m still happy with second… I tried asking too much in the first race and then struggled to find that flow afterwards. I’ve had a really good run – you can’t always win everything; it always comes to an end at some stage. We’re still happy with a second, and it was good to be able to rebound in moto two for at least a race win.”
With Jett Lawrence winning there on just two occasions, once on the 250 in 2022 and once on the 450 in 2023, it was simply one of the track he doesn’t enjoy and while some media in America will tell you Chase Sexton has turned the corner, expect the Aussie to come out swinging at the next round and set things straight.
"I made a mistake and lost some time trying to get back into a flow, and by then Eli had already built a gap. I’m still happy with second overall, though; you can’t win everything, and eventually a streak ends. I was proud to rebound in the second moto and grab the win there.”
So, while one foolish Sexton fan mentioned that Jett Lawrence was "on the ropes" after Washougal, a 60 point lead over brother Hunter (with just three rounds remaining) in the championship points and nearly 100 points lead over third place man in the points, Eli Tomac, the younger Lawrence brother is far from on the ropes, but more than likely doing the rope a dope on his rivals, a ploy famous boxer, Muhammad Ali would play on his rivals, as they punched themselves out and he would come back to win the World Heavyweight title in the later rounds.
We are all waiting now to watch as this generational talent does the same to his rivals in the AMA 450 motocross championship of 2025. While we all watched Ali slaughter George Foreman in the Rumble in the Jungle, back in 1974, be sure that Lawrence will do the same to his opposition, some 50 years later.
