Lucas Coenen - A New Era In GP
Red Bull KTM factory rider Lucas Coenen isn’t just a little special, this kid is very much the future of the sport and whether he stays in Europe for another year or two, or heads to USA, he will win championships and in bunches.
Now, the Europe deal, which would seem a little easier. We all know that Kay De Wolf (the guy who beat Coenen last year) will probably move to the MXGP class in 2026 and then we also have names like Liam Everts, Andrea Adamo, and Simon Langenfelder making the move in the coming years. It won't be easy in MXGP for the next decade. All these guys will be very good MXGP riders.
That seems a rather easy job though, compared to if he goes to USA, where Jett and Hunter Lawrence, Chase Sexton, Haiden Deegan, Cole Davies and Jorge Prado are waiting for him.
Either way, I think this Belgian youngster is good enough to beat them all, and that is a hell of a statement to make, because all riders mentioned are amazing athletes.
Yesterday though, Coenen continued to do things that nobody has done in the sport at his age. Sure, Tim Gajser is out, but let’s not forget, the five-time World champion was actually chasing Coenen when he crashed in Switzerland and hurt himself.
My gut feeling is, Lucas Coenen is now the favourite to win the 2025 MXGP championship, he just has to be in this current form and at the ease he is winning races. He has of course won the last five races in a row!!!
Below are some comments from his weekend at the muddy Agueda circuit in Portugal and you just know, Lugo in Spain will fit nicely into tracks that will suit the super talented sensation. How quickly a championship can swing and maybe even an era.
Going 1-1-1
Coenen: A really good weekend. 1-1-1 again and the three motos! The rain made the track so sketchy, and I was all over the place, but it was a positive first moto; good start and I tried to ride smart. It was hard to handle all those edges in the ruts with the 450 but we made it happen. In the second moto I managed the pressure from Romain, and I was a bit nervous at times but I’m so happy to win again. Let’s go again in Lugo.
Saturday Qualification Win
Coenen: The track was really brutal today. I messed up the start a bit and Romain (Febvre) closed me off, but I kept the pressure, and he made a mistake, and I was able to take over and control the race from there. The ruts are super harsh which make it hard on the jumps. You can crash jump pretty easily with the water when you land, and I had a close call on the finish. But I stayed calm, kept it smooth, and overall, it was a good day. Hopefully it’ll be a little less rough tomorrow—let’s see how it goes.
Moto One Win
Coenen: Honestly, I was not in control, I was all over the place and not in control. I tried my best, because Febvre has a lot of experience in the mud. He passed me, but I got him back. The track was better at the end, but edges and hard to control the 450, but I am learning every step of the way.
Sunday Overall Victory
Coenen: It was a really good weekend overall. I didn’t expect this kind of result coming in, especially with the mud—I struggled a lot here last year. I knew the starts would be key, and I managed to get them today. Romain (Febvre) was pushing hard the whole time, and I got a bit nervous, but on the last lap he made a mistake, and I didn’t see him anymore. That was probably my best lap of the race. Now it’s time to get back to work and focus on Lugo.
