Lucas Coenen - His Weekend
Red Bull KTM factory rider, Lucas Coenen continues to show us how special he is. In a week that the Belgian media filled a lot of his time, and the pressure of racing in front of your countrymen, the 18-year-old showed once again how good he is in race craft, but also in his endurance in the second races.
Picking up his 15th Grand Prix victory last weekend in the deep sand of Lommel, this special young man battled hard with red plate owner, Romain Febvre, on a track that the Frenchman has shown a liking for, time and time again.
Decked out in his special FLY Racing gear and looking a million dollars, the future for this talented kid from Belgium is bright, be it in Europe, or America, he will have a lot of success.
Now just nine points behind Febvre for the red plate, and with Sweden and Arnhem likely to be good tracks for the youngster, it is hard not to see the points gap even closer coming out of Arnhem, but whatever happens, it seems this 2025 MXGP championship is going down to the wire and that is something we all love to see.
For now, an international race in Belgium next weekend, where he will again come up against Febvre, a better prepared Jeffrey Herlings and a long list of GP regulars. One thing is for sure, a victory next weekend will be fun, but he has his eyes firmly set on the MXGP of Sweden, where he will try and rip that red plate from the green Kawasaki machine.

Saturday Win
Lucas Coenen: I was a bit sick yesterday and didn’t sleep much, so it was tough early on. I tried to save energy in the races, kept it safe at the start, and then pushed when I needed to. I controlled it from there and saved some energy for tomorrow. The track is already rough, and the fans are hyped, so I’m looking forward to tomorrow.
Winning At Home
Lucas Coenen: It is the best feeling out there. I couldn’t describe that last lap, I had chills, the best weekend. I chose a bad gate and had bad starts, and I was pushing from the back. I saw him going and I knew I had to get going, but I could make passes and get in the fight with other riders, until the end of the season. We had a good fight with Romain, and I saw him holeshot and he was riding good. He was in front and riding good and I tried to attack, and I managed to pass, and he managed to pass. Moto two I put my heart out there and it was perfect.
Moto One
Lucas Coenen: I came from the back and then I watched some lines and made some good lines. I passed him, but then he went for me, and I had to jump off the track. I was trying to find lines afterwards, but then I said he can have it. I will try and get the holeshot in the second one. I just tried to rest between motos and sit with my brother to see what we can improve.
Fighting With Febvre
Lucas Coenen: We had a good fight in moto one. Romain was riding really well, and we managed the gap. I tried to overtake a few occasions but couldn’t manage it. Moto two I just put my heart out there and went full-send. I enjoyed that last lap so much. I could cruise, roll and enjoy every moment. It’s the best victory I’ve had.
Perfect Laps
Lucas Coenen: I did some perfect laps (in the second moto), five perfect laps. I was enjoying riding in the second one, while in moto one I was holding back, and I wanted to roll in the second one. I put some pressure on, but you don’t want to mess up and I didn’t want to run into anyone. I saw an opening in the second one and went for it, but my best Grand Prix is still Finland.
Moto Two
Lucas Coenen: I didn’t want to waste any time in the second race. I came from the back and just pushed all the way to the front. Winning in front of the home crowd and my family is the best feeling ever. Romain (Febvre) has the red plate, but we’re still closing the gap, and I’m enjoying every part of the way. I wanted to win in Lommel, and we did it, so I’m super happy. Let’s keep the ball rolling. I am super pumped, and it was just survival. I didn't expect to do this on the 450, it a lot tougher than on the 250. I am super pumped to win this in front of the home crowd and family.
