Matt Moss Interview - WSX
The FIM World Supercross Championship lands on the Gold Coast this weekend for Round Three, and few riders are embracing the occasion more than Australia’s own Matt Moss. WSX caught up with the Aussie legend.
The veteran enters the event as the only full-season Australian competing in World Supercross this year and he believes Queensland is the perfect stage for what is tipped to be the biggest supercross race ever held on home soil.
The Gold Coast’s new supercross layout is already close to a sell-out, with anticipation building for a night Moss describes as historic for the sport in Australia. Having raced professionally for 37 years, he’s seen every major domestic event, but believes this one will eclipse them all.
The beautiful Gold Coast provides the backdrop
“For any motorsport, Queensland is the best. It’s beaches, sunshine, motocross tracks, supercross tracks – it’s the best place,” he said. I’ve raced in many stadiums and many events, and I’m looking forward to this weekend. Being the only Australian competing in the whole supercross season, I feel like the crowd should really get behind me. This will top anything in Australia so far, I feel. Being on the Gold Coast, it’s beautiful, and we’ve never had it this close to the ocean or had this calibre of riders.”
Aspirations for a podium finish
Moss has battled injury setbacks throughout the year, but his recent speed suggests he’s arriving at the right time. A notoriously strong starter, he believes the fast-paced World Supercross format could play into his strengths.
“I’m a Moss, mate! We’re always fighters,” he laughed. “I just want to get out there and do the best I can on the night. Potential top five – a podium might be a bit out of reach – but with the way this format is set up, three races, short gaps, high intensity, I think this weekend should be really good.”
Sitting just outside the top positions in the standings, Moss knows a strong result on home soil could propel him up the order as the championship reaches its halfway point.
With the unique Gold Coast atmosphere behind him and momentum beginning to build, the Australian is aiming to turn Round Three into a springboard for the remainder of his World Supercross campaign.
