Oliver - Podium Finish
Landrake Moto Parc it is a well known British motocross circuit set in the Cornish countryside near Plymouth. At the halfway point of the championship things become especially important because a lot can still change. Momentum consistency and avoiding mistakes are now crucial as every race starts to have a bigger impact on the final standings.
With the overnight and Sunday morning rain, the conditions suited the fast-flowing yet still technical track. Sunday’s action began with Gyan heading out for free and timed practice and this weekend there was only one group. Gyan felt comfortable and found his rhythm, even though the track was quite stop-start in places and had lots of on track traffic. Gyan set his fastest lap on lap three placing third overall with a time of 2:07, with just 1.8 seconds separating the top three riders. Next on track was Oriol and after achieving his best qualifying position at the previous round he was determined to improve on it, and he did exactly that. On this track setting a fast lap early was crucial and on lap two Oriol delivered his quickest time of the session with a 2:05, putting him two seconds clear of Mewse in second place. It was a very positive start to the day and gave Oriol a real boost of confidence heading into the races.
The start on this track was extremely important because even though it was wide it quickly became very one-lined with limited racing lines making overtaking difficult. With that in mind Gyan headed to the gate for the opening MX2 race of the day. He got an average jump out of the gate and charged down the start straight in a good position but heading into the first corner he got squeezed, dropping him back to around eighth place. During the opening ten minutes Gyan struggled to find his flow and had difficulty locating the key lines needed to make passes, remaining stuck behind Charlie Richmond. Eventually Gyan made the move and began to build a strong rhythm for the remainder of the race, once again setting some of the fastest lap times as the moto entered its closing stages. He worked his way up to fifth and closed the gap to fourth-placed Joe Brookes looking ready to make a pass. However traffic from lapped riders held him up and cost him valuable time. Gyan crossed the line in fifth place which was still a solid result heading into moto two.
After Oriol’s pole position qualifying performance where he showed stronger pace than both Conrad Mewse and Ben Watson, he had his sights firmly set on taking his first moto win. As the gate dropped for the opening MX1 race Oriol got a strong jump and entered the first turn in second place with Mewse in third. He briefly dropped back to third but quickly reclaimed second and immediately began pushing for the lead. Unfortunately Oriol then suffered a crash thankfully he walked away safely, but with all 38 riders passing him he rejoined the race dead last. With a huge task ahead and valuable championship points on the line, Oriol put his head down and went to work. Lap by lap he picked off riders and clawed back positions through the field. By the closing stages of the moto Oriol had fought his way back to a well-earned fourth place. However Hammel in third and the gap being 7 seconds gaining any more positions was out of reach.
The final MX2 moto of the day saw Gyan determined to bounce back after feeling frustrated with his first race result and wanting to finally put all the pieces together. However after not executing the start he needed, Gyan once again faced a difficult task if he wanted to fight for a podium finish. In the early stages of the race he was running in eighth place and trying to make the crucial passes needed to move forward. Although he felt comfortable on the track he struggled to make progress through the field. Ten minutes into the race the red flag was brought out due to an injured rider. After a 10-minute delay in the holding pen officials decided to restart the race with a staggered start on the mesh, giving Gyan another opportunity for a strong result.
With Billy Askew leading before the red flag he started first while Gyan restarted from eighth on the grid. Unfortunately Gyan began struggling with arm pump and just could not find his rhythm. Despite battling all the way to the finish he crossed the line in ninth place.
The final gate drop of the day was for MX1 Race 2, and after being left unsatisfied with the opening moto, Oriol was determined to fight back and make amends. Unlike his usual starts Oriol did not get away well and found himself buried deep in the pack, sitting around eighteenth place on the opening lap. With plenty of work to do on a track with very limited racing lines Oriol showed his GP-level race craft and charged his way through the field to fifth place. While making a move into fourth on Tom Grimshaw Oriol made a small mistake and went down losing two positions in the process. With only ten minutes plus two laps remaining he quickly regrouped and regained those places before setting his sights on third-placed Taylor Hammal. With the final podium spot on the line Oriol pushed hard right to the end and made the decisive pass on the final lap to secure third place in the race. Even though it was not the overall result he had hoped for he showed impressive speed, determination, and never gave up throughout the moto.
Gyan Doensen: “Not the easiest day at Landrake for the fourth round of the British championship. I am trying so hard at the moment and I will continue to do that. Again I showed I had the speed in moto one, second moto was terrible and thats on me. Looking forward to France next week riding MX2. Thank you to my team.”
Oriol Oliver: “I am a bit disappointed with the result yesterday especially because I felt like my riding was really good. I was able to take pole position and for the motos I crashed in both also the bad start in second one didn’t help, but we learn from that. Now the focus is for lacapelle and I am excited to be back in MXGP after the little break.”
Shaun Simpson - Team Manager: “Landrake marked the half way point of the 2026 British Championship and again a track that both Oriol and Gyan had ridden last year. Gyan started the day with a good quali but the starts let him down again this weekend. He struggled to make moves quickly, looked tight and 5-9 on the day wasn’t what we were looking for. Oriol took his first pole position of the season and knew his pace was there to fight for the top step of the podium. I think he wanted it a bit too much this weekend and a couple of uncharacteristic mistakes cost him big time as he had to fight through the pack in both motos. His riding and speed was excellent but we definitely let some points slip away in the championship this weekend.”
Gabriel SS24 KTM left Landrake feeling a little depleted, as there were significant changes in the championship standings across both classes. However the team still ended the day on a high thanks to Oriol’s podium finish. For Gyan in MX2 it was another tough and frustrating weekend. Knowing what he is capable of he finished seventh overall with a total of 28 points. In MX1 Oriol secured a podium finish on the final lap of the last moto, claiming third overall with 38 points. In the MX2 championship standings Gyan has unfortunately dropped to fourth place, sitting just four points behind Tommy Searle in third and ten points behind Ben Mustoe in second. He still holds a 19-point advantage over fifth-placed Billy Askew.
For Oriol in the MX1 championship standings he remains third overall, with the title fight incredibly close at the top. Only 13 points separate Conrad Mewse who claimed the red plate this weekend and Ben Watson who now sits second.
A massive thank you to KTM and all of our valued sponsors for your unwavering support throughout the season. Your trust, dedication, and commitment to the team give us the drive to keep pushing forward at every round, both on and off the track. The team now returns to MXGP heading to Lacapelle-Marival in France for round six of the MXGP season with Oriol, while Gyan will line up in the MX2 class as there is no EMX250 race in France. The event takes place on Sunday 18th May.
