Pauls Jonass Wins

Pauls Jonass Wins

May 5

Standing Construct rider Pauls Jonass has won the MXGP of Portugal, with 2-2 results. Chaos for everyone else, with Tim Gajser winning the opening race, but then crashing out early in the second race to finish 10th in moto two. Gajser did however take the red plate and has a handy points lead going into Spain next weekend.

Pauls Jonass: I have no words. I always enjoy riding in mud, but the teams worked so hard, even between the motos they changed the engine and this morning I told Stefan (Stefan Everts his trainer) I would surprise him today and this is the surprise. Yes, this year the main goal is to be consistent and we work hard and we improved a lot and you can see the results.

Romain Febvre: Yes, it was tough, tough conditions for everybody. I took two good starts and first moto I was battling with Tim, but then last lap I crashed twice and dropped to third. I hope Tim is okay, as I rode over his bike. I was third and almost passed Jonass and I knew it was for the GP win, but then I crashed. It could have been my GP, but this has been good for the championship.

World champion and former red plate man, Jorge Prado had issues in both motos to finish well down in the overall with 15-12, and Jeffrey Herlings DNFed the opening race while in second and won the second moto. Crazy, crazy weekend in the mud in Portugal.

Gajser led the second MXGP moto, but then crashed on the first corner, with Herlings taking the lead and Prado going down in the third corner and in pain. Another crazy moto in MXGP. It was Herlings, Jonass, Febvre, Toendel, Seewer, Bogers, Vlaanderen, Ostlund, Horgmo and Paturel 10th. Gajser already 14th and Prado back in 23rd.

Gajser flying through the pack and up t0 12th place as Herlings lead over Jonass was 2.3 seconds with Febvre a further four seconds back. Gajser back in 13th place as he losses a spot, but then quickly into 11th place. Prado up to 16th place.

Gajser a problem as he dropped to 15th place and was now trailing Prado, who was 14th. The lead by Herlins on lap three was 5.7 seconds, with Jonass second, then Febvre, Toendel, Seewer, Ostlund, Bonacorsi, Vlaanderen, Horgmo and Bogers 10th.

Prado up to 12th place and getting some points back after his miserable Saturday race and opener on Sunday. Prado moved past Watson to take 11th position, but Gajser still in 14th place. The lead by Herlings on lap five was 10 seconds.

Lap nine and the lead was 13 seconds, with Jonass second and then Toendel, with Febvre stuck in the mud for a short period. Febvre was fourth, then Seewer, Bonacorsi, Ostlund, Horgmo, Bogers, and Vlaanderen 10th. Gajser 11th and Prado 12th. Herlings wins the moto and Jonass the GP.
