Prado Goes 1-1 At Home GP
World MXGP champion Jorge Prado has regained the red plate and picked up Grand Prix win number five in 2024. The Spanish rider sent his countrymen into a frenzy with his sensational 1-1 performance. As hard as Tim Gajser, Jeffrey Herlings and Romain Febvre tried, Prado was just too good, once again. Herlings was second with 4-2 and Febvre third with 2-4. Gajser finished with 6-3 and lost valuable points for the championship.
Jorge Prado: I mean, I feel so good to be back on top. The last round in the mud was tough, but to win in my hometown, and I had so much to do this week. First the red flag and I thought, oh no, what is this, but I had a good start in the second one and fought with Calvin. So great to win here, so good.
Championship points are now Prado 298 points, Tim Gajser 296, Romain Febvre 267pts, Herlings 246pts and Pauls Jonass 217pts.
MXGP Moto Two
Drama at the start of the second moto was red flagged when both Prado and Herlings were stuck on the gate as their gates didn’t go up. It was clear their gates didn’t drop and the two didn’t hit the gates. The restart and it was Vlaanderen ahead of Prado, Coldenhoff third, then Febvre, Herlings, Seewer, Gajser, Guadganini, Guillod and Jonass.
Gajser moved past Herlings and Seewer and into fifth place. Prado into the lead and again looking to run away with the moto. Febvre third as Coldenhoff made a big mistake. Seewer passed Herlings and the Dutchman now in seventh place. Gajser moved into third as he passed Febvre.
One lap and Vlaanderen still on the back wheel of Prado with Gajser and Febvre about a second back and Herlings already seven seconds off the pace of Prado. Vlaanderen have the race of his life and he continued to hound the leader and Gajser and Febvre trying their best to not lose too much on the front man. Herlings nine seconds back from Prado.
Three laps and it was Prado with 1.6 over Vlaanderen, then Gajser 2.8 back and Febvre 3.4 back. Herlings into sixth as he passed Seewer, but Prado does the best lap of the moto with a 1.41.942.Prado not getting away from the three behind him but looking very comfortable in front.
Gajser clocked the best lap of the race with a 1.41.252 as he hounds Vlaanderen, and Herlings doing some very hot sectors. Prado then betters the lap time of Febvre and the lead on lap five was two seconds, but Gajser and Febvre were getting closer as they pushed Vlaanderen.
Gajser again a better lap time than Vlaanderen and Prado and really looking for a way past the South African/Dutchie. Herlings also looking fast in fifth place. Gajser pushed past Vlaanderen in a very exciting move and you just know that Prado, who is 2.1 ahead will be the next target.
Championship points were equal on 298 points each as we now have a shootout for the top two in the race and championship. The lead dropped to 1.3 seconds and Prado making little mistakes. Gajser looking quicker and more intent, but maybe also a little looser.
Gajser and Herlings both quicker than Prado on lap eight, but the World MXGP champion still leads and looks pretty comfortable. Gajser all over Prado now and really putting in a huge effort after his moto one off-track drama. Gajser the best lap of the race a 1.41.082 and he is motivated to pass the Spaniard.
Gajser looking a little erratic as he pushes as hard as possible to put more pressure on Prado, but Prado just riding his own pace and looking comfortable. Prado a good lap as he went 2.7 second ahead and maybe he was playing with the Slovenian?
Lap 12 and the lead was still around two seconds, with Gajser in second some five seconds ahead of Vlaanderen and Febvre and Herlings looking to close on the Yamaha rider. Herlings passed Febvre and looking really fast with five minutes and two laps to go.
Vlaanderen crashed as Herlings went under him to pass and handed Herlings third and Febvre fourth and Gajser closing up on Prado again. Herlings might also have something in the final laps. Gajser all over Prado now and this race just keeps on giving.
Gajser not giving up on the moto win, even if Prado will still win the Grand Prix, but its more about championship points, but then Gajser went down and Jorge Prado again will go 1-1. Herlings int second. On lap 17 it was Prado with a seven second lead, then Herlings, Gajser, Febvre, Coldenhoff, Vlaanderen, Seewer, Guadagnini, Guillod and Jonass in 10th. Prado win the moto, the Grand Prix and regains the red plate.
