Roczen The Champion
In what can only be described something out of Hollywood, veteran racer, Ken Roczen has won himself his first ever AMA 450 supercross championship. The German, who moved to USA in 2012 and has fought through severe injuries, led the main event early, with Hunter Lawrence (who had holeshot) on his rear wheel.
Ken Roczen: I’m speechless. It’s like everything just got boosted to another level. I’ve never felt anything like that, and no one can take that from me. Every single lap in that main event felt like it was the last lap! It was pretty insane, you know, just from the fans. It was insane every single lap. Every single lap felt like it was a championship last lap, so it was pretty cool. There’s been so much, over these last few years, that has happened, and it’s taken some serious, more mental work than physical work, to be honest, to get to this point. It was tough. I haven’t been in a championship position in forever, nevermind this close. Because the last championship I won in 2016, I wrapped it up a weekend early, so I had literally zero worries. And this was a completely different story. I’m glad it’s over. I’m tired!
As the two entered the early stages of the race, Lawrence pulled right up on Roczen and after sitting on his back wheel for a little while and with both Jorge Prado and Chase Sexton moving closer to those two, the pressure became immense. Lawrence sensing that Prado might become a problem, started making small mistakes and dropped off the pace of Roczen, then slipped over in a corner and more or less lost any chance of being the champion.
With Roczen still leading and Lawrence back in sixth place the lead over Prado was four seconds. With 10 minutes still remaining,it looked sure Roczen would be crowned champion, however Prado started making ground on the leader and as Sexton blasted past Prado and went after the German.
With only a couple of laps remaining, Roczen gave the lead to Sexton, rather than battle for the win and crash, and then Prado also got around Roczen, as did Justin Cooper and Cooper Webb, with the final main event finishing positions being Sexton, Cooper, Prado, Webb, Roczen, Hill and Lawrence.
Now with his MX2 world championship, his two AMA 450 motocross championships and this AMA 450 supercross championship, MXoN victory with Germany, not to mention world supercross championship success, the young kid who arrived in America with big dreams can relax on his CV and be proud of his success. What the future brings doesn't even matter anymore.
Earlier in the night Eli Tomac went down hard in the second 450SX heat race and did not finish the race as he was helped off the track. Ian Harrison mentioned in the television interview what happened.
"So, as you can see from this replay, as Eli is going through the section he's kind of buried in the start a little bit and it's a split lane and as he takes off from this jump, he gets hit from behind which he then loses control and basically Superman's on top of his bike. And he took all the impact on his hip on the foot peg. So, that's why he's got such a dead leg, and he's also got a lot of scrapes and scratches on his stomach, so that'll be the end of it for tonight for us.”
