Romain Febvre interview - Winner

Posted on August 03, 2021

Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Romain Febvre is probably in the form of his life as he battled the toughest season of Grand Prix motocross, with the deepest fields and the most World champions.

The 2015 World MXGP champion and multiple MXoN winner has already shown in the past he will race to the maximum and give 100% on the track, and at times that 100% can even go beyond what is possible.

Mistakes have been a major part of the 2021 season for the Frenchman and even in Lommel he has some small mistakes, but his speed and resolve to compete with the likes of Gajser, Herlings, Cairoli and Prado shows what a determined rider he is.

We caught up with the Lommel winner and asked him a bunch of questions about the win, Herlings racing injured and of course the MXoN, of which he has decided not to race.

MXlarge: You have been fast all year, but also made a lot of mistakes, to finally get this GP wins must be a bit of a load off your shoulders?

Febvre: No, I knew it would come. I made some mistakes again today, but just small mistakes. I learn and still, I was fast today and even with a crash I won the moto and the GP, and it is a good boost. We try our best next weekend and after we have some time to work on some things and we will see.

MXlarge: It seems as though everyone is making mistake, and the intensity of the class makes it hard not to crash and not make mistakes. How hard is that to deal with, because many times everyone looks on the edge?

Febvre: Yes, like we know Lommel is tough, deep, big holes and everything and I think here more than other circuits others make mistakes. I mean last weekend not so many made mistakes, I was one of them, but yes, for sure we are all pushing the limit and we make mistakes. It is a difficult sport, the bike is going everywhere and, in every corner, and we have big jumps, and it is so easy to make a mistake.

MXlarge: To win at Lommel, the toughest motocross track I the World, that must have been something you wanted for some time?

Febvre: I didn’t live in Belgium for seven-eight years for nothing! A good day, good start. Both motos I was leading and then first moto I made some bad laps and Jeffrey caught me and passed me, I tried to stay focused and follow him and learn from him and that is what I did. I didn’t let him go, but then after two laps I tipped over and crashed and I was all alone and settled for second place. The second moto I thought this could be my day. I took a good start and made a really fast lap to be alone and still, I made small mistakes, and crashed and I was fourth or fifth and it took me some laps to get going. I passed the guys in front and to win in Lommel it means a lot to me. I’ve been close a few years, and I feel my sand skill improved also. I feel free, I feel clean, and I feel really thankful to my team.

MXlarge: Five points down now on the red plate, I guess from now on get the consistent results?

Febvre: You believe or not, but I don’t care at the moment. We have done just six races and it is a long season. I will not look at the championship, I don’t care. It is always good to be on that position, to be close to the lead, that is always good, but to have the red plate at this moment means nothing. It is good, a good race for us today and many races to go, so let’s see the future.

MXlarge: Lommel still looked brutal despite the fact it was just MX2 and MXGP today. How was the track and how have you found the track compared to when more classes are racing on Sunday?

Febvre: Honestly, it is difficult to say. It was rough, definitely round and it was soft, I don’t know softer than the other years. Even in the morning. The things I like is Saturday it is just the EMX, and Sunday is for us, and they have time to work on the track. Even if it is just the take off. Some places they clean, and it feels tough, but it is safe, safer than before, because with all the classes they don’t always have time to work on the track.

MXlarge: You won’t race the Motocross of Nations, was that a difficult decision?

Febvre: It wasn’t a difficult decision. I cannot allow myself to do this. They should change the date; it can’t work in the middle of the season. You can crash anywhere of course, but in a race, you have more chance. For me, it was clear at the beginning, when I saw the date, that was it, I wouldn’t race. My federation agree with that, and they don’t know who to take and I think many good riders won’t do it. They can’t change the program, with points or whatever. I mean we have a lot of French riders in MX2, so what happens with that. Being in the middle of the championship is difficult and we a GP the week before and also a GP the week after, so for me, it isn’t possible.

MXlarge: You don’t have a contract for 2022, but are you talking with the new owners of the Kawasaki team?

Febvre: No, for the moment and it isn’t my job to do that, I have an agent who does that.

MXlarge: But you know what is happening in that area?

Febvre: Yes, I do know, and many things are not clear at the moment. I can’t say too much, but many things are not clear, and we are waiting. I am in a good position, and I am happy about that. I am focused on racing and not that. I feel like this year can be a good year and I focus on that.

MXlarge: Last question and I wanted to ask you about Jeffrey and riding with a fractured shoulder blade and being so fast. Do you have an opinion on that?

Febvre: He is used to that, he is used to that, what can I say more. I mean, he is trying, and we all try. I have also tried when injured and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, and it seems it worked for him today. He is trying, we all are trying, but the thing is, when it happens to me, nobody cares and when it happens to him, people care, so why should I care about him. I have nothing to say, he is trying and best of luck to everyone and we see at the end.
