Ruben Fernandez - Mister Consistent
Showing amazing consistency, Spanish charger, Ruben Fernandez of the HRC factory team, got his second podium in a row as the Spaniard went three-four for third overall in Lugo, Spain, which hosted the eighth round of the 2025 MXGP World Championship.
On the Saturday, Fernandez was involved in a first-turn pile-up, robbing the home rider of any chance of a good qualification race result at this MXGP of Spain. As the rain fell on this Lugo circuit, the #70 tried his best to come through the field, but on a track where passing was extremely difficult, he was only able to manage to come back to 15th.
“Definitely not how I was hoping the day would go. It’s never nice having to pick your bike up on the first corner, especially when you have scrapes down your arm and you’re missing a lot of your jersey! I tried my best to come through the pack give myself a fighting chance tomorrow, but 15th is the best I could do, and I guess we’ll see if that is enough to get near the front off the starts tomorrow. I really hope I can do well because I’m feeling good and my lap times are up there with the best so it’s just a case of getting a good chance and giving my all for all these fans who have been supporting me.”
Torrential rain hit the circuit early in the day to really make conditions difficult, but due to the nature of the soil, it never got as bad as Agueda last weekend. However, like in Portugal, starts were critical and despite only having 15th gate-pick after yesterday’s qualification race, Fernandez utilised the power of his Honda CRF450R to jump out of the gate and put himself in a position to get on the podium. Both races, he was inside the top five by the third corner and by running a good pace and making no mistakes, that’s where he stayed for the duration of both races, much to the delight of the home supporters around the circuit. After these two rounds on the Iberian Peninsula, he now sits just 16 points off the rider above him in the championship and well within reach of third place in the standings.
“Last year I wasn’t able to race here in Lugo, which was a massive shame but this year I am very happy to get to stand on the podium and see all the friends, family and fans who came out to support me. It is a special feeling to do so at a home GP and now I want to keep getting up on the podiums more in the future. I actually would have liked a little bit more coming into the weekend, but the conditions weren’t easy and in the end, this was all I could manage, especially after yesterday. I really enjoyed the past couple of rounds, racing in Portugal and Spain and getting podiums in both, so let’s keep the feeling going.”
Now a week break, before Fernandez heads to Ernee in France for yet another Grand Prix and another chance to continue his brilliant podium run and his just as impressive charge up the MXGP championship points.
