Sasha Coenen - Injury Update
Our Belgian friend, Jürgen Schrooten, who works as the deputy sports editor for the Belgian newspaper Het Belang van Limburg and send over this news this morning.
Sacha Coenen, who broke his collarbone in Southwick on Monday and underwent surgery in the United States. The procedure went well. He hopes to be on the starting grid for the British GP this coming weekend.
Sacha Coenen (19) delivered a heroic performance in Southwick on Saturday. The rider from Overijssel crashed heavily at the end of the second race, got back on his KTM, and still managed to win the race. At the finish line, he shouted that his collarbone was broken.
That turned out to be the correct diagnosis. On Monday, Sacha went under the knife in the US. The procedure, in which a plate was screwed onto his collarbone, went well. Coenen therefore hopes to be on the starting grid for the British Grand Prix this coming weekend. Not a given, but not impossible either. In the past, several riders have pulled this off, such as Simon Längenfelder in 2024. The German even finished in the top ten in Lugo, Spain, just one week after his surgery.
However, Sacha must first undergo tests with the International Motorcycling Federation doctor in Foxhill on Friday. Only when that doctor gives the green light will he be allowed to start. Coenen currently leads the MX2 World Championship, with a 14-point lead over Guillem Farres.
Twin brother Lucas also crashed in Southwick. He sustained no injuries and will definitely be on the starting grid in Foxhill this coming weekend. (Jüs)
