At 18 years of age, Red Bull KTM Factory rider Sasha Coenen has already achieved so much. A factory rider for the De Carli side of the Red Bull KTM factory effort, two Grand Prix victories and he has also represented his country in the Monster Energy Motocross of Nations.

With just 33 GPs under his belt, since his arrival on the GP scene back in 2022, when had had a single GP at the tough Loket circuit and crashed out to finish in 34th place, the twin brother of Lucas, has scored 640pts, won those two GP’s, won two motos, and in all fairness, his two GP wins are the only two times he has actually finished on the podium, which in many way is a pretty good win statistic.

Unfortunately, crashes and injury have balked his career with him finishing 14th in the World in 2023 and 8th in 2024. His two wins came in 2024, in his 25th and 26th Grand Prix’s, at Kegums in Latvia and he followed that up a week later, winning the Grand Prix of Italy at Maggiora, so two very different race circuits.

Sasha winning the Latvian Grand Prix, scoring his first ever moto win and GP win on the same day. The smaller of the brothers was showing big improvement of late and this GP victory was a long time coming.

“I did a good start, and I don’t know, I put pressure on Kay, and he crashed. So many mistakes, it was a difficult weekend I would say. Yes, I wasn’t feeling really good, but I felt good on the track. Second moto I was second and Kay crashed, and I managed to win. It is so nice.”

From the sand of Latvia, to the hard pack of Maggiora in Italy a week later, it was GP win number two, and it ended up being a close battle with his twin-brother, Lucas for the GP victory.

“It was a big win! I felt so good on the track and fought hard with my brother as he finished second. It’s a shame we couldn’t be on the podium together again but it’s really nice form and I’m really happy and look forward to rest of the season”.

Now, as we enter 2025, Sasha and his brother Lucas line up together in the De Carli KTM factory team and while Lucas is racing the MXGP class, Sasha gets his shot at a World title in the MX2 class. Do not be surprised to see Sasha be a serious contender this year and add to his two GP wins from last season.

“I’m really happy to continue in Red Bull KTM and to work with Davide and his crew next year. I’ve been learning a lot about the bike and the MX2 class these last two seasons and also my speed from the first laps of the moto until the end. We still have some work to do but we have made steps, and I am ready to progress again. I’m really motivated and really looking forward to 2025, as well from having Lucas next to me! We’ll do the best we can.”

With one eye set on racing in America in 2026, and one eye on the World MX2 championship in 2025, it will be interesting to see how much this 18 year old Belgian has improved in the off-season and if he can duplicate the rise of his brother, who showed big improvement from 2023 to 2024. Lets hope he can, and help Belgium continue their rich tradition in our magnificent sport.
