Steve Dixon interview - British GP

Posted on March 22, 2021

As always a nice chat with one of the most passionate people in the sport in Steve Dixon. The team owner, MXoN and MXGP promoter and an all round great guy we found out some interesting stuff when we call him this morning for a quick interview.

Some great news Dixon that the British Grand Prix is looking very likely to happen after all in 2021. While nothing is official the relationship between Dixon and Infront has always been good and with the UK doing a great job with the Covid 19 vaccine, and sporting events in the UK starting up again with crowds of up to 10,000 people, it seems that the British GP will be a must as the rest of Europe catches up with the UK.

Also, some interesting news about the British Motocross championship that will start with three rounds in May and one early in June, before the MXGP championship begins.

MXlarge: Steve, you have been involved in the sport a long time and heavily intrenched in the sport, in so many different areas. I am guessing you are still completely passionate about the sport and it is your whole life.

Dixon: My ex-wife Sally is sitting here, and she said it is my life. It is in my DNA. I look forward to coming to work every day.

MXlarge: With this last 12 months, I am getting pretty frustrated, because we thought we would be all sorted, what with the vaccine turning up earlier in the year, I really thought we could get started again in May, but it is still a while off, maybe June now for the start of the MXGP championship. How is that for you?

Dixon: The later the better for me. We are a small team, or just three people and it gives us the chance to get a lot of things sorted out. It makes up for the deficit. It allows us to do more development and more things correctly.

MXLarge: You must miss going to the races?

Dixon: Well, we will go racing and we will go more organized.

MXlarge: The rumours are flying around, maybe starting in Sardinia in June, maybe a triple header, maybe Latvia as a triple header after that. Have you heard anything?

Dixon: Not really. I guess if I was in their (Infront) shoes, it is okay to pick out one or two countries, but you can’t stop and start again and you need to get a run of a few races, some momentum for the championship. They don’t want to have three at one venue, but they need to do six or seven GPs in a row to give the sport a good look.

MXLarge: You mentioned a while ago you haven’t been contacted by Infront and that surprised me, as the UK is getting sorted with the vaccine and sporting events are starting there as early as April, and some with crowds.

Dixon: Obviously I always have contact with Infront, and we (British GP) are an option and there is a good chance there will be a British GP. However, you don’t want to come here as we can start shortly, then have a break before the next round because other countries are not as progressive with the vaccine. We always talk, and we are always there to help each other.

MXlarge: Which round will you have (laughing).

Dixon: (Laughing) No, it is pointless coming to the UK because we are the most advanced with the vaccine and we have a clear pathway, but it is pointless coming here and then not having anywhere else to go. But I am confident we will have a British GP at some point in 2021.

MXlarge: Everyone wants to see Matterley Basin on the calendar, it is one of the best tracks in the World and England is a great place to visit. Once we get to June and July, we should be okay in most countries in Europe with the vaccine, and many countries are already starting to plan the opening of their sporting event. So, are we looking at the British GP as one of the earlier rounds?

Dixon: Probably, I would say so and there are some empty dates anyway and we will fit in wherever, it doesn’t really matter to me. Apart from the weekend of Boomtown, which is August 14. The council are up for it and it doesn’t take long to organize a GP now and the track is ready to rock and roll.

MXLarge: I think you told me once it takes six weeks to get a GP organized?

Dixon: Oh no, physically up and running, about a week.

MXLarge: You mean organizing all the fences and catering and everything in a week?

Dixon: It doesn’t take long at all and we have the same people and they all know their job. If push came to shove, we could organize it in a week, but you don’t want to do that.

MXLarge: Of course you want to also have time to promote it and have a big crowd. I can imagine you will have a massive crowd in England, because you have been starved of motocross for so long?

Dixon: You would think so. I mean, you would think that.

MXLarge: What is the procedure at the moment in England with sporting events? I know they are having some sporting events with crowds in April, but what is the complete situation?

Dixon: I mean from the 29th of March we can go riding again and do outdoor sports. We are doing a small race locally on April 2 and run by the club. Officially you are not allowed a crowd yet. From May 17 you can have up to 10,000 outdoors and 4000 or 25% of the capacity at a normal indoor event. The British championship will run three in May.

MXLarge: That is decided already?

Dixon: Yes, that is the general feeling when it will happen. Three in May and one at the beginning of June, before the GP’s start.
