Thorpe and Geboers - Namur
I think we are all a little tinged with sadness when we think about the Belgian Grand Prix, despite the fact we head to Lommel this weekend, a circuit well worth holding a Grand Prix, around one of the toughest circuits in the World.
For me though and I am sure many others, when we think Belgian GP, we think Namur and it doesn’t matter how long it’s off the calendar, it remains deep in our hearts, memories that can never be replaced.

For me, as a veteran of the sport, I missed the golden years of Namur, as I only arrived in Europe full-time in 1993. I missed the De Coster era, or the Thorpe, Geboers, Malherbe era. Sure, I got to see the most successful rider ever at the circuit, Stefan Everts, win eight times there, in all types of classes and at the MXoN, but when I see video’s like the one below, or hear stories of the 1970s and 80s at Namur, I know I missed something pretty special.
So, sit back and enjoy this legendary battle between Eric Geboers and Dave Thorpe, with a cameo from my countryman, Jeff Leisk. Also a great interview with Thorpe about this race on Dirthub website from Jeff Perrett: My Greatest Race - David Thorpe - Dirt Hub. Adam Duckworth image from Dave Thorpe collection
