Two Other Brothers - Double

With the stunning performance of the Coenen brothers last weekend, with Lucas and Sasha winning the MXGP and MX2 round, held at Kegums in Latvia, we look back many years ago when two brothers also claimed a double family victory.

The Pourcel brothers Sebastien and Christophe famously won on the exact same day. On July 15, 2007, French brothers Christophe and Sébastien Pourcel made motocross history at the Grand Prix of Italy in Faenza.

They became the first brothers ever to sweep both major classes at an FIM Motocross World Championship event on the same day. Christophe Pourcel went 2-1 in the MX2 class on his Kawasaki, taking the overall Grand Prix victory. He was the reigning MX2 World Champion at the time. Second was Antonio Cairoli with 1-2 and third was Tyla Rattray with 3-3.

Sébastien Pourcel, shortly after his younger brother's win, rode his Kawasaki to victory in the premier MX1 class, beating top competitor Josh Coppins to complete the historic family sweep. The older Pourcel scored 1-1 results, with Coppins getting 2-2 and third was American, Mike Brown with 4-4.

Historical Context

This historic feat took place over Bastille Day weekend. It stood as a completely unique achievement in GP motocross for nearly two decades. The record for brothers winning on the same day was recently matched in June 2026. Twin brothers Lucas and Sacha Coenen both took overall victories at the MXGP of Latvia.

An interesting twist, it was in 2007 that Christophe Pourcel was racing some rounds of the AMA supercross, prior to the defence of his world MX2 title. Before defending his world title in Europe, the 18-year-old Pourcel travelled to the United States to test his skills in the AMA Supercross Lites (250cc)

On January 13, 2007, riding as a guest for Mitch Payton’s Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki team, Pourcel shocked the field by winning his very first AMA Supercross main event in Phoenix. Just a week later at Anaheim II, his American campaign was cut short when he suffered a compression fracture to his right lower tibia (shin bone). He returned to France to heal and prepare for the world championship.

Of course, today, the Coenen brothers will be heading to USA for their debut in the AMA Nationals and we in Europe wish them all the success for what is for the young Belgians, a dream come true.
