Vialle Wins in Finland

Posted on August 14, 2022

Tom Vialle of the Red Bull KTM factory team has won the GP of Finland with a very consistent 2-1 performance, but while it sounds consistent, it was a wild ride to the victory. Crashes and bar banging was the name of the day as he finished with enough points to close the championship points lead by Jago Geerts to be just 15 points with two rounds remaining, Jago Geerts 676 points, Tom Vialle 661pts.

Tom Vialle: I am so happy, I had a good start, but went out of the track and got passed and then Van De Moosdijk had a crash and I got the win. Thanks to the team, because we made many changes overnight. Track was so hard, I had two great starts and had a good sensation on the track. I think Jago crashed on the first lap or something. It was so hot today, but thanks to the team and see you all in France next weekend.

Kay De Wolf: I ran out of time in the end. It was a difficult second moto, because I made a mistake and Vialle passed me, but I nearly got him back. I am happy about my weekend and tomorrow morning we have a race in Belgium and next week in France.

Jago Geerts: For sure I had a perfect weekend until the second moto. I crashed and came back fast, but I lost a lot of energy in the end of the second moto. I look forward to France next weekend.

Second overall was Kay De Wolf of the Husqvarna factory team with 3-2 and third was series leader Jago Geerts of the Monster Energy Yamaha team with 1-7 results. Like Vialle Geerts was all over the place with good speed and big mistakes costing him a GP win and an extension in his championship lead.

Geerts again led the MX2 moto as he held first in front of Everts, Guyon, Van De Moosdijk, Vialle, Rizzi, Benistant, Stauffer, de Wolf and Langenfelder 10th. Vialle moved past Van De Moosdijk for third.

Geerts crashed and was stuck under the bike and well back as Liam Everts leads his first MX2 race in his young career. Vialle into the lead and Geerts back in 19th place. Championship points at this point was pretty much equal. Van De Moosdijk into second as Everts dropped to third.

Lap two and Geerts already into 15th place and de Wolf also went past Everts. On lap three Vialle crashed and dropped to second place as De Wolf passed Everts. Top ten on lap three was Van De Moosdijk, Vialle, de Wolf, Everts, Guyon, Langenfelder, Benistant, Horgmo, Pancar and Haarup. Geerts up to 13th place and still the red plate owner at this point.

Lap five and the lead by Van De Moosdijk was 4.1 seconds, with Everts still third, then de Wolf, Langenfelder, Horgmo, Guyon, Benistant, Haarup and amazingly, Geerts into 10th place and flying through the field.

De Wolf all over Everts and the two friends fighting for third position as Geerts moved to ninth place and building on his points lead over Vialle again. On lap seven it was Van De Moosdijk, Vialle, Everts, de Wolf, Langenfelder, Horgmo, Guyon, Haarup, Geerts and Benistant.

Geerts into 8th position as he passed Guyon, and pushing to get past Haarup. Up front the lead by Van De Moosdijk was 5.7 seconds with De Wolf moving past Everts. Geerts down hard as he crashed with Haarup and while he didn’t lose a spot, he passed Haarup, but Benistant went past.

The top ten on lap 10 was Van de Moosdijk, Vialle, de Wolf, Everts, Langenfelder, Horgmo, Guyon, Benistant, Geerts and Haarup. Geerts moved into 8th place and on lap 12 de Wolf was all over Vialle for second place. Geerts into seventh and making something of what was a rough second moto.

On lap 13 the lead by Van De Moosdijk was 5.2 seconds as Vialle and De Wolf battle. Everts was still fourth, then Langenfelder, Horgmo, Geerts, Guyon, Benistant, Pancar in 10th. Van De Moosdijk down and Vialle into the lead, but de Wolf still hounding the Frenchman. Vialle wins the moto from De Wolf and Van de Moosdijk third.
