Vialle Wins In Sardinia

Posted on May 15, 2022

KTM factory rider and former World MX2 champion Tom Vialle has put on a strong performance in the draining heat of Sardinia with a 2-1 performance and score his 18th Grand Prix win in his career. The Frenchman was tough as many riders struggled with the warm temperatures. Red plate owner Jago Geerts went 1-2 for second overall and Thibault Benistant third overall with 3-3 finishes.

Tom Vialle: I am so happy, in the sand it isn't always easy and today was so hot. First moto I battled with Jago, but then crashed. The second moto I had a good start and controlled the race and won.

Jago Geerts: It was a pretty good day. First moto a win and second moto battling with Tom and it was tough, but difficult to find a place to pass and next round we start again.

MX2 championship points are now Jago Geerts on 338 points, some six points ahead of Tom Vialle with 332 pts, then Simon Laengenfelder 244 pts, Mikkel Haarup 244 pts and Kevin Horgmo 233 pts.

Benistant led the second MX2 moto from Vialle, Geerts, Adamo, Horgmo, Gifting, Polak, Haarup, Karssmakers, and Boegh Damm in 10th. Vialle quickly into the lead and Geerts passed Adamo to move into third place. Everts crashed early and last.

Geerts into second place and Horgmo moved past Adamo as the front saw a lot of positional changes. Langenfelder after a poor start was into 12th place and Everts into 16th. Geerts started to hound Vialle for the lead as the best in the class battle for the GP victory.

After three laps it was Vialle, Geerts, Benistant, Horgmo, Gifting, Adamo, Haarup, Langenfelder, Boegh Damm and Brumann 10th.  On lap eight the lead by Vialle was 1.7 seconds, with Geerts still second, then Benistant, Horgmo, Gifting, Adamo, Haarup, Langenfelder, Boegh Damm and Brumann still 10th. Everts up to 11th in a nice charge from the back of the pack.

Not a lot happening in the mid-stages of the race, although Vialle and Geerts were stuck together and 15 seconds ahead of Benistant, Everts moved into the top ten passing Brumann. It looks like Geerts was ready to pounce on lap 14 as he pushed the Frenchman to the limit.

Vialle though started pushing even harder and made the gap 1.4 with three laps remaining in the moto. Vialle wins the moto and the GP as Geerts finishes with 1-2 scores for second and Benistant 3-3 for third.
