Webb Wins in Salt Lake City

Posted on June 04, 2020

Red Bull KTM Factory rider Cooper Webb has won the second night in Salt Lake City after taking the lead mid-race from early leader Zach Osborne. Finishing second was Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Eli Tomac, with Osborne on his Rockstar Energy Husqvarna third. HRC rider Ken Roczen after a horrible start was fifth and dropped a lot of points to Tomac.

Tomac now has 13th points over Roczen with five rounds remaining. 275pts for Tomac and 262pts for Roczen. Webb is back in third with 246pts and 29 points back from Tomac.

"I mean," Webb said. "We will see (if he is in the championship chase again), it was a great night to get second off the start and Zach was riding good and I could see Eli was coming. I knew I needed to break away. It was a great night overall but it was a tough race – the track conditions were definitely tricky and you had to be patient out there. The whoops were tough, I just committed to my lines from the beginning and it played out pretty well. It was a great night to get a win, these are not easily regained, especially with the top guys up here tonight so I want to soak it in but we’ve got five more rounds to go.”

"I was fighting all I could," Tomac said. "Cooper got us there and I was wild down the second straight and got pushed back, and then started moving forward. Zach and Cooper had the pace. It was a good night for the points."

Amazing anticipating as the riders lined up for the 450 main event and Roczen took the very inside gate pick, a gate that had not taken the holeshot the whole night. Brayton was second on the start picks with Tomac starting in third position, while Webb was fourth gate pick. The start area was rutted out badly, apart from the area right in front of Roczen, was that his reason for taking that “pole” position?

Tomac looked very comfortable and relaxed as Roczen looked a little tense and while many of the 450 riders went mountain biking between the Sunday and tonight, Tomac didn’t, instead taking a walk with his family in the hills. Preparation is everything and you wonder which rider has the mental edge.

Terrible start for Tomac as he was in 11th place, and Roczen was down in 16th place, who both were terrible out of the first 100 metres.

Soon after Roczen blew past Tomac and was suddenly 8th, with Tomac 9th. Osborne lead from Webb with Barcia third. Tomac back past Roczen and then they swapped positions a couple of times.

Roczen sixth and Tomac seventh as they worked their way through the field and Osborne held a 1.6 second lead over Webb, with Barcia more than a second behind Webb. Roczen and Tomac moved past Wilson and both were all over Barcia for fourth place. Anderson was up to third place.

Barcia moved past Barcia and into fourth position. Tomac also past Barcia and it would not be long before these two got to the podium guys. Amazing watching Roczen and Tomac coming through the pack. Roczen blitzing the whoops and there is his edge over Tomac tonight.

Anderson, Roczen and Tomac started closing up on Webb, who had in turn gotten closer to Osbornes lead. First five Americans on the track all former Team USA riders, and between them Team German competitor Roczen and Team GB rider Wilson.

Tomac all over Roczen and he passed the HRC rider to move into fourth place. Tomac has worked out the whoops and his points lead turned into nine points. Tomac going after Anderson and that third place.

Former East Coast 250 champion Osborne led 2018 and 2019 AMA supercross champions Webb and Anderson, but Tomac, moved into third place and Roczen starting to fade badly, now eight seconds behind Osborne.

Webb was suddenly all over Osborne, and Tomac was edging closer to the two leaders. Webb looking strong, and he knows he needs a victory. Tomac suddenly loses time on Webb and Osborne, and as the two leaders start to lap riders, slower riders might make things difficult.

Webb all over Osborne for the lead and Roczen now 12 seconds behind these two. Tomac making some quicker laps and getting very close to the two leaders. Anderson nine seconds back. If you were a betting man now, you would be putting your money on Tomac.

As Osborne and Webb battled for the lead, Tomac was just watching and waiting. Anderson 11 seconds back and Roczen 15 seconds back, then Wilson, Barcia, and Stewart. Webb took the lead with three second remaining, and Tomac was right onto Osborne and Webb.

Lapped riders started getting between the others and Webb, but Tomac passed Osborne and went out after the leader. Roczen 18 seconds back in fifth place. Webb making some nice laps and held a 1.4 lead over Tomac, and just a minute to go.

An exciting finish as Tomac closes up on Webb and with a lap remaining Tomac made a small error and gave Webb breathing room. Webb wins it from Tomac and Osborne.
