World Top Ten - This Month

Posted on August 16, 2018

It has been another sensational month on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Jeffrey Herlings and Eli Tomac are being kept honest by Antonio Cairoli and Marvin Musquin, and in the MX2/250 championships its Aaron Plessinger and Jorge Prado showing the way. Here is out top ten from the last month.

1. Red Bull KTM Factory rider Jeffrey Herlings continues to dominate the fastest motocross riders in the World, with his 1-1-1-1-1-1 results from the last month, and victories in countries like Indonesia, Czech Republic and Belgium.  Not only different countries, but three totally different types of circuits, be it the second round of the Indonesia adventure, which was played out on a very American type of circuit, with big jumps, and very technical sections. The next round he scored a 1-1 at the old school Loket circuit, not his favourite, but hey, this guy is unbeatable on anything at the moment. Of course he ended his last four weeks with a win in the deep, deep sand of Lommel. Nobody is on this guys speed at the moment.

2. Marvin Musquin has been impressive this last month. Winning two rounds of the AMA 450 nationals, scoring consistent results (2-1-4-2-2-3-2-10cand again, like Herlings winning in different conditions. His victory at RedBud was around a very typical AMA circuit, but his win last week in Unadilla was on a European styled track, and he really showed how adaptable he is. He might be 15 points behind Tomac in the championship picture, but his month has put him in the position to put pressure on the America when it comes down to the championship rounds, and with the added motivation to stick the middle finger up to the French federation, I wouldn’t bet against him.

3. Eli Tomac has been, well Eli Tomac. On his day the fastest rider in the World, but that has to be if everything is going his way, and his 36-9-1-1-1-1-1-2 results from the last month is a bit typical of what he is capable of on both sides of the spectrum. A lot of my American friends have said he is riding better than ever, and he just might be, but until he gets more consistent, then he will struggle to take Herlings from the top spot of our World top ten.

4. Antonio Cairoli is and will always be one of the toughest competitors the sport has seen. His resolve in this current Herlings domination probably gives the Sicilian even more fans. He has been consistent, with 3-4-2-2-2-2, but even those scores have seen Herlings pull away in the championship race. Still, the other Red Bull KTM Factory rider isn’t giving up, and a slight mistake by Herlings and Cairoli will be like a bull terrier looking for the Dutchman’s ankles.

5. Aaron Plessinger is probably the fastest 250 rider in the World at the moment, and I can’t wait to see him racing at the MXoN for Team USA. Not only a very funny guy, but clearly talented. His lead in the AMA 250 championship looks safe and he will join a long list of American champions. Even in defeat at Unadilla he was all class, and you have to respect somebody with that talent in a World that often has assholes at the elite level.

6. Jorge Prado is doing what is needed to capture his first World motocross championship. At 17 years old, his talent is unquestionable, and his recent run of form has seen him go 2-1-3-1-1-1 and take over the red plate from defending champion Pauls Jonass. What he can do around the circuit in Switzerland this weekend might be interesting, as he loves that place. Is Prado as good as Plessinger, its hard to know, and it will be one of the big question marks going into the MXoN in October.

7. Ken Roczen might not be the Ken Roczen prior to his injuries, but he is still capable of running with just about anyone in the sport. The HRC rider and former AMA and FIM champion is slowly coming back, and while he sits in fourth in the AMA 450 championship points, expect him to pass third placed Justin Barcia sooner than later.

8. Tim Gajser might not be the same guy from 2015 and 2016, but he is very much a big talent and his form is slowly getting close to those two seasons of magic. His only problem is, that bloke called Herlings, or and Mr. Cairoli. Still, his 2-3-3-3-7-7 isn’t bad and the best of the rest in MXGP.

9. Dean Ferris is the man down under, and while he might not be racing GP and AMA guys, believe me, he is good enough to be top three in USA and probably top five in GP. On the right bike, and under the right conditions, the Aussie is a very competitive rider and his third Aussie championship has assured him to move to America in 2019 and go for it there. He will shine for sure.

10. Romain Febvre has been solid lately, and like Gajser he isn't like he was in his championship winning season, but don't be surprised to see him shock a bunch of people at this years MXoN. He is getting stronger and more confident and showing it in results. Still, he isn't close to the big two of World motocross Herlings and Cairoli, but he is working on it.
