A2 2006 - Gallery
2006, possibly the best AMA supercross season ever, as Ricky Carmichael, James Stewart and Chad Reed went at it, ending the season with just a handful of points between them. It was a bitter rivalry, that made covering the sport, at times, very uncomfortable and difficult.
The era of these three, saw tough, close fights, where the big three clearly disliked each other and for a media guy from Australia, it was a challenge covering the races and even getting any interviews with either Stewart or Carmichael.
I had travelled to America from 1978 until 2006 and enjoyed most of my trips to USA, but this season really gave me a bitter taste in my mouth, as riders become hard to deal with, under the pressure they were under and dislike they both had for Reed.
After 47 years of visiting the US, from supercross events in the 1970s, USGPs in the 1980s and a bunch of AMA supercross and motocross events, I decided the 2006 would be my last season of going to dozens of races in a season, and I chose Anaheim 2 to be the last time I would visit a supercross race in America.
Since then, I have attended MXoN's and USGP, but those trips were few and far between and now at 65 years old, travelling to US might be done forever for me.
Here is a gallery of my images from that A2 race and it was Ricky Carmichael on in the big boy class and Grant Langston in the Lites who would win. It was a time when non-American media really struggled to get a media pass for the infield of the circuit, but due to having a handful of magazines I worked for, I was lucky enough to generally get a media pass. My photography wasn't brilliant, but I hope you enjoy the images anyway.
