Andrea Adamo - His Month
Former World MX1 champion, Andrea Adamo of the Red Bull KTM Factory team sure is making things look good for his challenge to current MX2 champion, Kay De Wolf. A battle of the 2023 and 2024 champions is getting a lot of momentum as both Adamo and De Wolf swap GP wins in recent time.
Having won a Grand Prix in France and in Portugal, the Italian rider is on 359 points, just 21 points off the series leader, de Wolf. What makes that all the more impressive, is the fact Adamo scored zero point in the opening Sunday moto in Argentina, after winning the Saturday qualifier and then went out and finished second in the second moto there.
Adding to his 1-DNF-2 scores from Argentina, his Sunday performances have been impressive, with the highlights since round one, so far being, five moto wins, four second places and two third places.
The biggest problem for Adamo though has been zero points in qualification races in Trentino and in Lugo last weekend. Just to level things up, de Wolf has also had zero points in one Saturday race, but in general, that DNF in Argentina is more or less, the only difference in their championship points so far.
A popular rider and somebody who really wears his heart on his sleeve, Adamo is impressive to watch and with help from five-time World motocross champion, Joel Smets, his road to title number two might be a difficult one, but he is showing, it is very possible.
The last month has been good to Adamo, with Switzerland, Portugal and Spain showing that his performances remain consistent and some really big points hauls. He has also doubled his GP wins tally for his career this year, adding another two, to the two he scores in 2023, when he won the championship.
Lugo GP 5-1 Second Overall 41 points
“Two completely different races. One was very muddy and when I did the sighting lap I saw there were many ruts from the European Championship races but they were full of water. The start was demanding, and I didn’t have the best one. I had to capitalize on what I could manage. My day was decent, and I won the second moto on a drier track. Good to win...but also not the best weekend. I’m happy that I’m competitive more or less each weekend but I need to be more regular because the rest of these guys are fast.”
Portugal GP 1-1 First Overall 50 points
It means a lot. It is crazy, in these conditions, its unbelievable. Super, super happy and hope to keep the momentum. To keep this momentum, is going to be difficult, but I try my best. I rode well, really well. Yesterday I put myself in a good condition for today. To go 1-1-1, it is the first time I have done this, so I am really happy. I rode well, really well. No mistakes and good starts, especially yesterday, and that put me in a good position for today, which was really important with the weather.
Switzerland 5-3 Fourth Overall 38 points
“A decent weekend. Nothing special. In the first moto I had the speed and a good feeling but I made a mistake in the first three-four laps that destroyed the race because the good start I had from P3-4 became P9. It was not easy to make passes but I managed a few. P5 in the end, but our potential was for better. My feeling was a bit different in the second moto. It wasn’t the best but I could still come home P2. Solid. I missed the podium by a bit and we need to work more to not make mistakes on the first laps. For sure, not every weekend can go super-well but we need to salvage points when they don’t go so well. A week off now and then we go to Portugal.”
