Coenen Battles Herlings
Red Bull KTM factory rider Lucas Coenen rode a sensational race in Germany this afternoon, under huge pressure from five time World motocross champion, Jeffrey Herlings, but the teenager held on for the moto win from Herlings and Calvin Vlaanderen, with Romain Febvre fourth. Again Coenen cuts the puts lead in the MXGP championship. It is now just 38 points difference between Coenen and Febvre. Romain Febvre 467pts and Lucas Coenen 429pts.
Lucas Coenen: I was waiting for this moment, to see Jeffrey behind me and nice to win in front of him. This moto was fun and I got a beat of the beast mode. I think in the second moto we make a good battle.
MXGP Moto One
Coenen in the lead in the MXGP moto one in Germany, with Herlings second and Fernandez third, but he went down hard in the opening lap, with Febvre fourth, then Vlaanderen, Gifting, Seewer, Coldenhoff, Jonass, Pancar, Ludwig in 10th. Coenen flying as he opened a 1.5 second lead very quickly. Coldenhoff also went down and well back in the pack.
Lap one it was Coenen, Herlings, Febvre, Vlaanderen, Gifting, Seewer, Jonass, Pancar, Renaux and Bogers 10th. Geerts in 13th, Coldenhoff 21st. Herlings, like in yesterday’s qualifier not allowing Coenen to get too far ahead as Febvre made a mistake and dropped to fifth. The lead by Coenen remained 1.4 seconds, with Vlaanderen now third, three seconds back. Fernandez out of the moto, with it looks like a shoulder problem.
Herlings closed up on Coenen for the lead and showing some of his old form. With Coenen still leading, Herlings was getting close, as were Vlaanderen and Febvre, so maybe a four way battle for the top spot. Coenen seems the master of controlling his race, so hard to tell if he was under and pressure.
Not much happening as the top four are within remain close, with the lead by Coenen less than a second over Herlings, Vlaanderen 2.1 back and Febvre three seconds off Coenen. Top ten on lap eight was Coenen, Herlings, Vlaanderen, Febvre, Gifting, Seewer, Jonass, Renaux, Bogers and Van Doninck.
Herlings all over Coenen for the lead and Vlaanderen and Febvre also within two seconds of the leader. Coenen showing ridiculous nerves as Herlings continues to put a lot of pressure on the young teenager. All four riders riding faultless in front. Such a difficult circuit to make up time. Top ten on lap 12 was Coenen, Herlings, Vlaanderen, Febvre, Seewer, Gifting, Renaux, Jonass, Bonacorsi, and Bogers 10th.
Coenen made a small break from Herlings on lap 13 as it opened to 1.7 and Vlaanderen and Febvre were three seconds back and fighting for third place. Herlings all over Coenen, Febvre all over Vlaanderen as the dark cloud arrive in Germany. Could be some rain. Get the feeling Coenen might just be doing what he needs to, without riding over his head, but the others are also pretty smooth.
Three laps remaining and again Herlings really close to Coenen, but lapped riders now making life difficult for both riders. Both Coenen and Herlings can show blistering speed in the final laps, but who wins this one? Coenen wins from Herlings and Vlaanderen, with Febvre fourth.
