Coenen Closes The Gap
Sensational teenager, Lucas Coenen of the RedBull KTM factory team made another step closer to red plate owner, Romain Febvre with a 1-2 result and another Grand Prix victory at the though Loket circuit in the Czech Republic. It was his 14th GP victory in his young career.
The youngster, in his rookie season in MXGP just looked too smart for his rivals as he heads to his home Grand Prix in Lommel, with a lot of momentum and consistency. Second was Romain Febvre of the Kawasaki factory team with 5-1 and third overall Fantic factory rider, Glenn Coldenhoff with 4-3 scores.
Championship points are now Romain Febvre 678 points, Lucas Coenen 668pts, Glenn Coldenhoff 494pts, Ruben Fernandez 451pts and Calvin Vlaanderen 392pts. So, just 10 points seperating Febvre and Coenen.
Lucas Coenen: I mean, I wish it (the race) was longer, because I felt good and was pushing. I knew this track is tricky and I didn't care if I won or lost, because you can lose a lot here. I saw he (Febvre) was pushing at the end, but we showed we have the speed and the home GP is coming and I look forward to that. We just keep pushing until the end. I mean, it was good and happy to come out first and gain some points. I had some arm pump in that second one and then passed Glenn. Lets go and head to Lomme.
Romain Febvre: I was up and down. Yesterday was good. First moto I didn't get a good start and it took me so long to pass Pancar and then made a big mistake in the last lap and crashed. Second moto I took a good start and quickly first and made a gap and won, but disappointed to miss the overall.
Glenn Coldehoff: It has been another good weekend. Missed my start in the first one, but still managed fourth and I almost had it in the second one, but stalled the bike. Happy to get a podium and next week Lommel, I can't wait.
MXGP Moto Two
Coldenhoff with the lead early over Febvre and Coenen, with Gifting fourth, then Vlaanderen, Pancar, Ludwig, Seewer, Geerts, Bogers and Bonacorsi. Coldenhoff and Febvre getting away from Coenen and big gaps appearing between many of the top ten as the race already spreads out. Coldenhoff the quickest lap of the moto, but it still looks like he is slowing Febvre up and Coenen started getting closer.
Febvre into the lead as he passed Coldenhoff and Coenen right up on the Dutchman. Coenen doing a bit of a Herlings with some quick times and all over Coldenhoff for the second position. Febvre with a two second lead and pushing to get away.
Lap seven and the lead by Febvre was 3.2 over Coldenhoff, with Coenen 5.7 behind and seemingly satisfied with that position and the GP overall. Then came Gifting, Vlaanderen, Seewer, Geerts, Fernandez, Pancar, and Bogers 10th.
The gap moved to six seconds between Febvre and Coldenhoff and Coenen was now 10 seconds off the leader and just cruising. Gifting was actually making ground on the Belgian, as Coenen made a small mistake.
Lap 11 and Febvre was 8.4 seconds ahead of Coldenhoff, with Coenen suddenly starting to close up on the Dutchman and got away from Gifting in fourth place. Filling out the top ten was Vlaanderen, Seewer, Geerts, Fernandez, Bogers and Bonacorsi.
Coenen all over Coldenhoff, with both these guys also catching Febvre. Maybe a three way battle for the lead as the moto gets to its climax. Coenen really looking aggressive now. Coldenhoff having to push harder to keep Coenen off him and the gap to Febvre dropped to 7.5 seconds. Coenen a beautiful pass on Coldenhoff and charging. Febvre though, too good and takes the moto win, but Coenen gains points and takes the GP overall.
