Red Bull KTM factory rider, Lucas Coenen has completely dominated the opening MXGP moto, taking the lead early from Tom Vialle and just riding off into the distance. The Belgian teenager looked brilliant as he even made in form Jeffrey Herlings struggle to keep the pace up front. Herlings finished second, some 20 seconds back, after moving into second early, and Romain Febvre was third, 38 seconds behind Coenen.

Coenen moved into the series points lead with his win, Lucas Coenen 77 points, Tom Vialle 75pts, Romain Febvre 75pts, Jeffrey Herlings 72pts and Maxime Renaux 60pts.

Lucas Coenen: I mean, feeling good, the start I had trouble, but then I locked in and took second behind Tom, but I passed him and then I got a gap and controlled it. I am not thinking about the championship, just focusing on myself and I am loving it.

Vialle grabbed the holeshot from Coenen, Herlings, Adamo, Febvre, Renaux, Guadagnini, Gajser, Watson, Jonass, and de Wolf 11th. Guadagnini a mistake and back in 8th place and the top four all the big boys of the class.

Coenen pushing Vialle hard and Herlings trying to stay with the two younger riders. Nearly three abreast as Coenen take the lead and Herlings into second, but Vialle takes it back. This is very frantic racing. Herlings knows he has to stay with Coenen and trying to get into second as quickly as possible.

Coenen getting away quickly with a 1.5 second lead and Herlings desperate to move into second, but Vialle blocks his pass, but then the Dutchman did move into second. Top ten on lap two was Coenen, Herlings, Vialle, Febvre, Adamo, Renaux, Gajser, De Wolf, Guadgnini and Jonass 10th.

Coenen opened the lead to two seconds, but you know Herlings can give a headstart and still come back to win. Lap four and its 2.2 lead for the Belgian. Coenen four seconds ahead and in control ahead of Herlings, with Vialle 7.5 back and Febvre 8.7 off the pace of the young Belgian.

Coenen now 5.2 ahead and just beautiful on this rough and tough sand circuit. Lap five and its 7.2 seconds and even Herlings unable to keep the pace of the very talented Coenen. Looking down the list of top ten guys, only Coenen in the top eight without a world championship.

Febvre all over Vialle for third place, and the lead between Coenen and Herlings was 8.9 seconds. When it gets to the 10 minutes to go mark, that is when we might see a Herlings charge.

12 minutes to go and the lead is around 10 seconds, with the top ten, Coenen, Herlings, Vialle, Febvre, Renaux, Adamo, Gajser, de Wolf, Watson and Guadagnini. Fernandez a nice charge after crashing in the opening lap and up to 13th place. 10 minutes remaining and the lead was 12 seconds. Ben Watson riding well in 8th place and in amongst the world champions.

Four minutes remaining and two laps and the lead was 14 seconds as Coenen goes into cruise mode, to save energy for the second race. Herlings a bunch of seconds ahead of Febvre and that is how it would end. Brilliant performance by Coenen, but can the two veterans fight back in moto two?
