  • Race Report

Red Bull KTM factory rider, Lucas Coenen has won the MXGP qualification race with a start to finish win. The Belgian teenager showed Jeffrey Herlings the way after the Dutchman was quickly into second place but couldn’t make ground on his fellow KTM factory man, until the final laps. Second was Herlings and third red plate owner, Romain Febvre.

As has been the case in the last month or so, Coenen is making ground on the points lead of Febvre, but today, just two points. Every point counts as they say.

Championship points are now . Romain Febvre 449 points, Lucas Coenen 404pts Tim Gajser 305pts, Glenn Coldenhoff 302pts, and Ruben Fernandez 298pts. The lead by Febvre now 45 points.

Lucas Coenen: I struggled with arm pump and I don't know why. Hopefully its just Saturday and I will be okay tomorrow. I tried to control the arm-pump and I didn't know Jeffrey was so close at the end, and I got the pit board and I thought I have to make that last corner good.

MXGP Qualification Race

Lucas Coenen led from Pancar, Herlings, Gifting, Jonass, Renaux, Jonass, Febvre, Vlaanderen, Fernandez and Ludwig 10th. Seewer 11th, Coldenhoff 12th and Geerts 13th. Febvre quickly into fourth place and Coenen getting slightly away from Herlings.

Coenen a blistering lap and the gap was 1.5 with Herlings still second, and Pancar in third, 3.4 seconds off the leader. Febvre catching the third placed man and no doubt, looking at going after Coenen and Herlings.

Coenen continued to open the gap somewhat to two seconds and Fernandez right behind Febvre in fifth place. The lead was three seconds with Pancar in third 5.3 off the leader. Lap three and the gap was 3.5 as the young Belgian continues to show great speed.

Coenen the best lap of the moto and the gap still didn’t get too far out as Herlings hanging in there for now. Not a lot of action until now, although back in the pack, Jonass, Vlaanderen and Renaux in a battle for seventh spot.

On lap five the lead was 4.2 with Herlings three seconds ahead of Pancar and Febvre still on the back wheel of the privateer rider. Febvre into third place with a pass on Pancar and closing up on Herlings, who was 4.6 behind Coenen.

Herlings not allowing Coenen to get too far ahead as the gap was four seconds on lap eight and Febvre was 3.2 behind Herlings. The remaining top ten was Pancar in fourth, then Fernandez, Gifting, Jonass, Vlaanderen, Renaux and Ludwig, still in 10th.

Febvre did catch up to Herlings in the final laps and pushed the Dutchman all the way to the end. Herlings also caught Coenen, but maybe the Belgian was playing, or are we seeing Herlings late lap speed back? Coenen wins it from Herlings and Febvre.
