  • Race Report

HRC rider and five-time World motocross champion Tim Gajser has won the MXGP of Maggiora in a drama filled day. The Slovenian scored victory on the Saturday qualifier, then won the opening moto of Sunday, before finishing with a second place after leading a lot of the moto but crashing and handing Jeffrey Herlings the moto win.

Herlings finished second with 3-1 scores and third was Jeremy Seewer with 5-3. Jorge Prado finished with 2- DNF results and lost a massive load of points on Gajser and Herlings closed right up on him for second in the championship.

Championship points are now Tim Gajser 511 points and 34 points ahead of Jorge Prado on 477, with Jeffrey Herlings on 440 and just 37 points behind Prado, then comes two solid riders in Calvin Vlaanderen 339 and Jeremy Seewer 332.

Tim Gajser: It was good. I am super happy with the riding and starts. Shame about the crash, I thought I had it in control and Jeffrey passed me. Winning here, its nearly a home GP win and thanks to all the team for helping me out. It was a good weekend, already yesterday I felt great and the crew did a great job, because they did a good job. We had great racing and really looking forward to going to Indonesia, two back to back races.

Jeffrey Herlings: Yes, I felt I had to speed both motos to win and you saw today there was hardly any passing and I had to speed to pass in the first moto, but at the end of the day, 3-1 for second overall, I will take it, onto Indonesia.

Gajser led the second MXGP moto from Herlings, Seewer, Gifting, Bogers, Guadaganini, Horgmo, Paturel, Pancar and Quarti, but the big news was Jorge Prado crashed hard and had to return to the mechanics area and was a lap down when he returned with a very broken bike. The tough Spaniard was back in 24th place and looking for as many points as possible. He was also limping (pain in his knee the official comment).

Gajser had the lead, but right on his back wheel was Herlings, who was going to make up huge points on Prado and Gajser will have a large series points lead leaving Maggiora. On lap three it was Gajser, Herlings, Seewer, Gifting, Bogers, Guadagnini, Paturel, Pancar, Quarti and Monticelli in 10th. Coldenhoff was 11th, but moved to 10th a pass on Quarti, and Prado was still in 24th and a lap down on the leaders and a minute behind 23rd place rider. Prado cruising now as it looked like his GP is over. Also holding his leg.

On lap five the lead by Gajser was 2.3 seconds, but Herling was coming. Lap eight it was Gajser with a 1.7 second lead, then Herlings, Seewer, Bogers, Gifting, Guadagnini, Paturel, Pancar, Monticelli, and Vlaanderen 10th.

Herlings all over Gajser on lap nine and looking for a way past. Herlings hit a hay-bale and nearly went down and the lead by Gajser was extended to 2.7 seconds. Herlings had set the fastest lap of the moto before his mistake. Herlings really looking like the Herlings of old, as he goes after Gajser again.

Gajser a mistake and Herlings into the lead as the HRC man crashed. The lead for Herlings was seven seconds, but the GP win will be Gajser. Lap 14 it was Herlings with a 7.5 lead over Gajser, then Seewer, Bogers, Gifting, Guadagnini, Vlaanderen, Paturel, Pancar and Coldenhoff.
