  • Race Report

Jeffrey Herlings just keeps winning and on Saturday, with rain and clouds, the Dutchman has won the qualification race for the MXGP class. The five time World champion took the lead on the opening corner and was never caught. Second was Tim Gajser and third, Romain Febvre. Lucas Coenen finished in seventh place and lost valuable points to Febvre. The points gap is now 30 points in favour of the Frenchman.

Jeffrey Herlings: I had a double less and with it being humid, it fogged up. A win on Saturday, feels so good.

MXGP Qualification Race

With rain falling and in front of a large spectator attendance in China, the MXGP started their race with Herlings calling for help on the start line for his goggles, but no worries, the Dutchman took the holeshot and might not be needing goggles. Second was Renaux, then Geerts, Gajser, Febvre, Jonass, Fernandez, Vlaanderen, Coenen and Bonacorsi. Slippery conditions and we could see some drama today.

Herlings always good in the mud, as Gajser moved into second place with a pass on Renaux and Febvre up to fourth spot.Geerts who started well back in 21st spot. The Aussies involved in 21st and 23rd, with Watson and Rogers and our two Chinese representatives, Li and Riga in 22nd and 24th.

Herlings with a second over Gajser, with Renaux three seconds off the leader, then Febvre, Fernandez, Vlaanderen, Coenen, Jonass, Bonacorsi and Coldenhoff. Febvre moved into third place as he passed his fellow Frenchman in Renaux. Coenen 11 seconds off the leader and struggling somewhat.

Coenen challenging Vlaanderen for sixth place to try and make his way to the front riders. Lap five and the lead by Herlings over Gajser was just 1.7 seconds, with Febvre a further second back in third place. Filling out the top ten was Renaux, Fernandez, Vlaanderen, Coenen, Jonass, Bonacorsi and Coldenhoff.

Herlings extended his lead to 2.3 seconds, with Febvre now four seconds off the Dutchman, with Coenen some 13 seconds back in seventh place and losing very valuable points. What has maybe helped Coenen, is the rain has cooled the air and we all know, Febvre can be tough when the temperature is high. Herlings wins it from Gajser and Febvre.
