Like so many in the sport, Kevin Horgmo is out for the season after having surgery for damage to his thumb. Below is what he told us on social media

Kevin Horgmo: This is unfortunately not the news that I wanted to share with you, but I’m out for the rest of the season with a thumb injury. My ligament in the thumb is broken and yesterday I had surgery to it. So, what happened is three weeks ago now I was out cycling and the road was a bit slippery. I slid the front wheel and put my thumb in the ground. At first, I thought only the tip of the thumb was dislocated. I put it back there and then in place during my crash and after I visited the doctor and got some x-rays and everything was looking okay.

The doctor said just take some rest and then we’ll be fine. So, I was believing in this but I wanted to try to race Finland and I went there with a really sore thumb and pretty painful. You can imagine trying to race with one hand because I wasn’t able to hold on with the other hand and in every braking bump it was hurting a lot.

I was thinking to just do Finland and then get some rest and it will heal for sure, but it wasn’t healing, it wasn’t getting better. So, I decided to get MRIs on last Friday. The MRIs shown that it’s a clear rupture in the ligament and it’s broken.

It’s called a scarce thumb so it’s a very difficult injury and it needs to be fixed within three weeks otherwise you are at risk for having the thumb be unstable for the rest of your life. I have a career in motocross that I hopefully can ride still 10-15 years and also I want a normal life afterwards. So, I was rushing to get a surgery somewhere but with the holidays it’s not easy at this time but luckily I got in at my hospital and they made the surgery last night. So I was really happy about that that now it’s fixed and now I can start recovering.

Also, I got a bad shoulder as you know and it requires surgery as well so probably in the next two-three weeks I will also have surgery to that so that means my season is finished. It’s been a really up and down season and the biggest up and down came at the same weekend actually in Ernee, France where on Saturday I took a second in the qualifying race which was like so amazing and then in the first race I was chasing the guys in front and just make a small accident on the corner and somehow ripped my shoulder out and dislocated for the fifth time. So, for sure it’s not good and after that I’ve just been managing my shoulder, wasn’t able to train, wasn’t able to ride and was only racing.

During the races maybe I didn’t point out that I was struggling so much with the shoulder because it felt quite okay but when you’re not able to train and you only race… it’s not the best. After this injury comes new injuries and hit my head pretty good in training and I’m just really happy that I still managed to clinch the French title and I managed to do that. I’m very happy for the team to be able to deliver them the French championship and also for all the team sponsors. I’ve been struggling for this latter part of the season with a good reason so that’s how motocross works.

We all struggle with some different injuries here and there but anyway I think now will be good for me to get my rest, get my thumb fixed, get the shoulder fixed, focus for the 2026 season. I signed again with the team Honda SR Motoblouz team for next year so I’m very excited to continue with those guys for my third consecutive season in the MXGP class. So very grateful for them to keep supporting me also in these tough times and I’m ready to come back strong after a good winter after fixing all these injuries and yeah really happy to stay there another year and work with those guys so big thanks to them.

Now the plan is to just rest a bit, be here at home in Norway, see what happens. I haven’t really had many holidays in the past few years. I think the last time I had an injury like this where it required surgery was in 2016.

So that was eight years ago that I had an injury that finished my season like this and I think that’s quite a good run so hopefully I can get some mental power and rest a bit and do some things that I haven’t been able to do lately to focus forward and focus really to the 2026 season and get motivated for that to train hard this winter. I’m looking forward to it, so I just want to thank my team and all of you guys for still supporting me and everything. I wish I was in Uddevalla to race for the Swedish GP but injuries happen, and life is like this. So thanks to all of you and hopefully see you on track soon. Ciao ciao!
