Loretta Lynn - Day 3 Report
With a full slate of second motos on deck, Thursday was the proverbial moving day at the 44th Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship Presented by AMSOIL as the class title fights formally took shape ahead of the all-important third and deciding set of motos. A bit of a reprieve from the extreme heat that defined the first two days resulted in more tightly contested races, but Mother Nature once again had the last word as lightning and thunderstorms cut the day short.
Moto 2: Mini Sr. 1 (12-14)
The second moto of Mini Sr. 1 kicked off Thursday’s action with an exciting three-rider battle for the win. The race began with Triangle Cycles BLU CRU Yamaha’s Cooper Johnson pacing the field, but not without heavy pressure from KTM rider Hunter Vagele and Altus Motorsports BLU CRU Yamaha’s Tayce Morgan. The lead trio duked it out through the first half of the moto, separated by less than three seconds.
After showing patience, Vagele decided to make his move and successfully passed Johnson to take the lead. Vagele was able to establish a slight advantage initially, but both Johnson and Morgan closed back in to reignite the three-way battle. A slow lap by Vagele opened the door for both of his rivals to make passes, which dropped the KTM rider from first to third. Johnson reclaimed the lead and withstood heavy pressure from Morgan in the closing stages to take the win by 1.8 seconds. Vagele lost touch late but kept his hold of third, with JK Powersports KTM’s Jackson Vick in fourth. Moto 1 winner and Husqvarna rider Maddox Temmerman was never a factor after starting 19th, but valiantly worked his way through the field to finish fifth.
The third and final moto for Mini Sr. 1 is scheduled for Friday. After two motos, Morgan’s 2-2 finishes have given him a one-point edge over Temmerman’s 1-5 finishes. Vagele is third, with 5-3 finishes leaving him four points behind Morgan.

Moto 2: 250 B
After a difficult end to the Moto 1 in which he was forced to settle for second despite dominating most of the race, KTM Orange Brigade’s Deacon Denno entered Moto 2 looking to finish the job. As the race took shape, it quickly turned into a head-to-head battle between Denno and Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Green’s Vincent Wey, who took advantage of a stellar start to take control of the moto.
Wey’s ability to log consistent laps helped keep a persistent Denno at bay. The duo was never separated by more than 1.5 seconds as their pace moved them well ahead of the rest of the field. Just past the halfway point, Denno’s relentless pressure paid off as he made the move on Wey and grabbed the lead with just a few laps remaining. Once out front, Denno sustained his pace as Wey slowed considerably after giving it his all for most of the moto. Frustration turned to elation for Denno as he took the moto win by 7.5 seconds over Wey. Yamaha rider Owen Covell, who won Moto 1, finished in a distant third, followed by EBR Performance/Altus Motorsports BLU CRU Yamaha’s Chace Lawton in fourth and Xtreme Powersports GASGAS’ William Canaguier in fifth.
The final 250 B moto is slated for Friday. Denno’s 2-1 finishes give him a one-point edge over Covell’s 1-3 scores, with Wey’s 3-2 results positioning him just two points behind Denno.

Moto 2: Supermini 1 (12-15)
After an impressive winning effort in Moto 1, GASGAS rider Colt Martin carried the hot hand into the second moto of Supermini 1. However, when the race got underway it was the GASGAS of who grabbed the early lead. However, Pappas went down and lost several positions, which allowed KTM rider Noxx Lewin to move into the top spot ahead of Martin and JM Racing GASGAS’ Darren Pine.
Lewin withstood the advances of Martin for a couple laps, but soon enough the Moto 1 winner was back in a familiar spot out front. Pine was in the thick of the lead battle and made his way by Lewin to slot into second behind Martin. On this day, Pine was the quicker of the two and he made the move for the lead just past the halfway point. Once he moved to the front, Pine was able to put distance on Martin and carried on to take the moto win by 8.4 seconds. KTM Orange Brigade’s Nolan Ford put forth an impressive ride to finish third, overcoming a 13th-place start to land on the podium. Lewin followed in fourth, with JM Racing KTM’s Gauge Brown rounding out the top five.
The tense third Supermini 1 (12-15) moto is scheduled for Friday. By virtue of their identical moto finishes, Pine (2-1) and Martin (1-2) sit tied in the overall classification, setting the stage for a winner-take-all third moto.

Moto 2: 85cc (10-12) Limited
Based on his performances leading up to Thursday’s second moto of 85cc (10-12) Limited, it was Twisted Development KTM’s Sawyer Gieck’s race to lose. Although the Wyoming rider did miss out on leading the opening lap to fellow KTM rider Nolan Cobb, Gieck easily moved into the lead and asserted his hold on the position. Behind him, the speedy KTM of Eidan Steinbrecher moved up to second and began chipping away at the deficit to Gieck.
Steinbrecher was the fastest rider on the track and laid down the quickest lap of the moto to close to within two seconds. Gieck responded by picking up his pace, which stabilized the gap separating the KTM duo. Steinbrecher reloaded for one final push in the closing laps, which moved him closer than he’d been all moto, but ultimately ran out of time as Gieck remained undefeated for the week with a winning margin of just 1.3 seconds over Steinbrecher. KTM rider Whalyn Ballenger gave the Austrian brand a sweep of the moto podium in third, with Husqvarna rider Landon Lee in fourth and Altus Motorsports BLU CRU Yamaha’s Jaydin Smart in fifth.
The third and final moto for 85cc (10-12) Limited is scheduled for Saturday. Gieck’s perfect 1-1 finishes give him a significant four-point lead over Ballenger’s 2-3 results.

Moto 2: Schoolboy 1 (12-17) B/C
After an unpredictable first moto that saw four different riders lead a lap, the second Schoolboy 1 moto on Thursday was considerably more straightforward as one rider made an assertive statement in his pursuit of the class championship. After a quiet and unassuming fourth-place finish in Moto 1, Altus Motorsports BLU CRU Yamaha’s Kane Bollasina made his presence felt by leading every lap of the second moto. The Missouri-born racer put his Yamaha out front early and managed a multi-second lead throughout the entirety of the moto with consistent lap times.
With the Moto 1 win in hand, KTM Orange Brigade’s Braxtyn Mes came into the day in a position of control and rode a tactful race to secure his position atop the overall classification. The Californian began the race in third and quickly slotted into second behind Bollasina. While he was able to make some runs and apply pressure on the lead, Mes didn’t force the issue and ran comfortably in the runner-up spot. When the checkered flag flew, Bollasina finished with a margin of 5.6 seconds over Mes. EBR Performance Yamaha rider and Mexico City native Alessandro Carminati finished in third, followed by South of the Border MX KTM’s Kevyn de Pinho in fourth and Altus Motorsports BLU CRU Yamaha’s Colby Lessar in fifth.
The final Schoolboy 1 moto is scheduled for Saturday. With his 1-2 finishes, Mes holds a two-point advantage over Bollasina’s 4-1 results.

Moto 2: Open Pro Sport
Given his reign of dominance thus far at the Ranch, the question entering Moto 2 of Open Pro Sport was whether anyone could stop the red hot, undefeated start from Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Green’s Enzo Temmerman. The answer to that question was yes, from a familiar foe. From the outset of the moto Temmerman faced an uphill battle as he didn’t get a good start and was forced to work his way forward seventh in one of the deepest fields of talent at the event. Meanwhile, fellow Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Green rider Landen Gordon took advantage of one of his trademark strong starts to grab the early lead and set a torrid pace in the opening laps.
By the completion of the third lap, Gordon’s lead had grown to 10 seconds over Altus Motorsports BLU CRU Yamaha rider Kade Johnson. As Gordon ran away with the moto, Temmerman clawed his way up to second at the halfway point. Facing a double-digit deficit, Temmerman didn’t force the issue and ran lap times that mirrored and often bettered those of Gordon. In the end, Gordon led every lap to secure his first moto win of the week in convincing fashion, crossing the line 10.7 seconds ahead of Temmerman. Johnson was never challenged en route to third, while South Mississippi Powersports Husqvarna’s Heath Harrison finished fourth, followed by Munn Racing Husqvarna’s Diesel Thomas in fifth.
The stage is set for a dramatic third moto of Open Pro Sport on Saturday. In trading moto wins, Gordon (2-1) and Temmerman (2-1) sit tied atop the standings and will embark on a winner-take-all showdown in Moto 3.

Moto 2: Women
After what was arguably the single-most-dominant moto at the Ranch thus far, Altus Motorsports BLU CRU Yamaha’s Lachlan “La La” Turner was favored to duplicate her effort in the second Women’s moto. The key to Turner’s success in Moto 1 was a strong start that allowed her to move into the lead early. She did the same in Moto 2, positioning herself near the front out the gate in order to make an aggressive push to the lead on the opening lap.
Through the opening laps of the moto, Turner was able to consistently post laps that were around five seconds quicker than Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Green’s Kyleigh Stallings in second. By the time the moto reached its halfway point, Turner’s lead sat at 22 seconds, which paid big dividends when she tipped over and needed extra time to remount and continue on. After initially losing 10 seconds in that exchange, the Nevada native restored the advantage and took another dominant moto win by 21.3 seconds over Stallings. Riding on the Edge Yamaha’s Jordan Jarvis earned another third-place finish, with Sun Powersports KTM’s Mayla Herrick fourth and Solid Rock Facilities Husqvarna’s Lilly-Ann Pettus in fifth.
The final Women’s moto is slated for Saturday. Based on her first two outings, Turner (1-1) is in control of her own destiny, but Stallings has done her part with back-to-back runner-ups to sit just two points behind.

La La Turner / Hannah Jamison / Raycin Kyler / Yumena Berning
While La La Turner has dominated the Women’s class, the Yamaha rider is also going head-to-head against her male counterparts in 250 B Limited. Turner leads an impressive group of young female talent taking on their male counterparts, which includes Hannah Jamison, Raycin Kyler, and Yumena Berning.
Turner has given it her all in 250 B Limited, earning 29-16 finishes. Jamison, who similarly has a share of the lead in Girls (11-16), bounced back from a DNF in the first moto of Mini Sr. 2 to finish 13th in Moto 2. Meanwhile, both Kyler and Berning are contesting the limited and unlimited classes of their respective displacements.
Kyler is off to a great start in 65cc (10-11) Limited with 4-2 finishes that have positioned her with a real opportunity to make history with a class championship. She complemented that with a 10th in 65cc (10-11). Berning is also knocking on history’s door, with 2-5 finishes in 65cc (7-9) Limited and a pair of fourths in 65cc (7-9).
Regardless of where they finish, these talented females are showing their mettle on amateur motocross’ biggest stage.
