Down Under Thunder - The Week
We have already enjoyed a spectacular MXGP of Australia last September, and numerous big occasions for the sport in Australia. Roger De Coster and Joel Robert racing there in 1972, then Gaston Rahier, Hakan Carlqvist, Ricky Johnson, Mike Bell, Marty Smith, Neil Hudson, Jeremy McGrath, Jeff Emig, Ricky Carmichael, Stefan Everts, Joel Smets, Jeffrey Herlings, Tim Gajser and many others have raced at some point in the land of beautiful beaches, kangaroos and koala bears.
A Motocross of Nations, three Grand Prix's and a bunch of international supercross and motocross events, but there is more to come. Australia isn't just a beautiful country for holidays, its a place young men learn to race motorcycles.
Now, two brothers, who picked up Australia’s first ever Motocross of Nations victory in 2024 and then defended it in October of this year will return this week, for another celebration of one of the most influential countries in the sport.
While Australia has enjoyed a lot of huge events in the past and their history of supercross goes back to Parramatta in 1977, this coming week might just be the biggest week in the sports history.
Starting this coming weekend with the Aus X Open, set for the city of Melbourne in Victoria, and then a week later, a round of the World Supercross Championship on the Gold Coast of Queensland.
One week it will be The Lawrence brother’s vs Cooper Webb and then the next Eli Tomac vs Haiden Deegan vs Cooper Webb vs Ken Roczen. It doesn’t really get much bigger than that. Nearly 50 years of Aussie supercross and we come to a golden week for the sport down under.
“Last year was unreal — the crowd, the energy, everything about it,” said Jett, reigning 2025 SuperMotocross World Champion. “I’m coming back to Marvel Stadium in 2025 to take care of business. Last year we came back with my brother. We just sold up everything and now dad has spoken to me about what we went through, we didn't have a plan B and now we end up coming back after all we have been able to achieve."
“That night meant everything,” Hunter Lawrence said. “From the moment we walked in, we could feel the support from the Aussie fans. The energy in the stadium was insane. Winning at home, with our family there — it’s a memory I’ll never forget. And now, to come back for the 11-year anniversary?
"It’s going to be unreal. Australia has been waiting a long time and you have no idea how long I have been waiting. Aus X Open is like an American supercross. It is cool, we got a lot of International riders coming and that is what makes the Aus X Open so unique. This home coming is the full circle. We left Australia with crazy goals and try and make something of it. We showed this is possible and to return home after all we have been through."
Then we head to the Gold Coast, one of the most beautiful cities in Australia and a place people generally party and enjoy life. For those able to attend the WSX round, it will be something very special.
Everyone in Australia awaits a battle of the veteran and the young kid. Both Eli Tomac and Haiden Deegan are generally not huge on overseas travel, with Tomac slowly enjoying it more and more and Deegan obviously realizing what he has missed out on.
At just 19, Deegan has become one of the most talked-about riders in the sport. With multiple U.S. race wins and five championship titles, he is known for his explosive speed, fearless race craft, and magnetic personality that’s captured fans around the world. Deegan brings a fresh energy and fearless attitude wherever he lines up – and now he’s bringing that same fire to Australia for the very first time.
“I can’t wait to continue my racing international with World Supercross. It’s crazy to think my first race outside the U.S was in Argentina and now Australia – two awesome spots with passionate fans. I’m ready to race hard and give everyone a great show.”
Both shows will be shown on live streaming servies and later in the week, we will give full details of where to find these, plus race schedules and much more. Obviously, mxlarge will bring both event alive on our website, with full race reports, images and so much more.
